Vista Business 32 to 64

#1 Post by miketoro » Sat Apr 25, 2009 4:04 pm

I read somewhere that you can upgrade Vista Business 32 for free to Business 64. If this is correct, what is that process like? Is it an online event such as Windows Update or does it require, as I would imagine, discs from MS, reformat, the whole show? Has anyone who's done it shed a little light?

Many thanks,

That's the one!

If your COA is for Vista Business, the key on the COA will work for the x64 version, but its up to you to find installation media for the x64 version.

64 bit discs are difficult to find. You'd probably have to know someone with one.

Many thanks,
I am not sure which model ThinkPad you are planning to use, but 64 bit on my T60 worked pretty well. Lenovo offers drivers and other features for the 64 bit operating system.

My T60 runs a bit hotter with 64 bit, but otherwise is OK. You will not be "thrilled" with the change to 64 bit. It isn't really any faster, and it is possible some of your programs may not run. The programs that do run, will be run as 32 bit, as the operating system is "smart" enough to deal with that pretty well.

Unless you want to convert to to 64 bit as a technical experiment, I would say, don't bother; it's a lot of work for very little gain.

The boost of 4gb memory in Windows isn't worth it, then?
