FarStone Drive & Vista on X41 Tablet?

#1 Post by globalkiwi » Sat Apr 25, 2009 10:08 pm

I'm about to upgrade my X41 Tablet to Vista but wondered about the FarStone drive (w/- is I believe the virtual drive where the R&R files are stored) that came loaded on the XP factory preload. Windows upgrade advisor suggests this will likely not work in Vista. Has anyone had any experience with this issue? I'm not sure how to proceed - whether I should abandon the drive (which presumably means the R&R function) or figure out whether there's a way to make it compatible with Vista ...
Suggestions appreciated!

It's a virtual drive, but not one where the R&R information is stored. My understanding, after running R&R on my X41t a few nights ago, is that the program is meant to be used in place of having a CDROM or DVD drive (and disk) connected to the system. I thought that the program was installed by the previous user but was surprised to find it re-loaded after the full system recovery. Checking the tabook, it appears that this program was part of the original install.

Thanks, that's interesting. I had originally assumed like you it was PO installation but when I used R&R & it reappeared, I assumed it was where the R&R files were stored. Rather strange that they should include it with little or no info. about how to use it. I've never used it (have a "real" optical drive in the dock bay) & presumably it's taking up valuable hard drive real estate ...

Some would call a utility like this which is included with the standard disk image as "bloatware". But actually in this case, it seems to make some sense. My assumption (I haven't actually tried running the program) is that you make an image of the CD or DVD and place it on your hard drive. You then can disconnect from the X4 dock/Ultrabase/USB optical drive and still access the virtual disk drive. Looking at Windows Add or Remove Programs wizard, VirturalDrive itself takes up a little bit more than 20MB so it's not consuming that much space. However, the Zinio Reader and SketchBook programs don't appeal that much to me :)
