R60E Freezes after reformat......?
Hallo,
I have just acquired an R60E Thinkpad from my niece who assures me it was working ok for her. I did a clean re-install of XP and it works ok for about 10 or 15 minutes before it locks up. When it's working, it seems fine until the freeze when I have to disconnect the power.
I've tried to do some research on the problem and it's not overheating, there's no junk in my temp folders, my av & firewall are up to date, it's been defragged and I've run JV16 on the registry but still the problem persists.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Many thanks,
Lagoonius

Welcome to the forum!
It would not hurt to run MobileMeter on your laptop, just to be sure it is not an overheating problem:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Sys ... eter.shtml
Does your fan run when you turn on the laptop?
Press F1 at boot to go into the BIOS. Check the BIOS and Embedded Controller Program versions.
Did you install all the necessary IBM/Lenovo drivers and utilities?
What is the 7-character TYPE of your laptop (on the bottom, looks like e.g. 0656-A3M)?

Re: R60E Freezes after reformat......?
Thanks for the welcome!
Model no. 0657-4UG
Bios & ECP are v. 1.02
I ran MobileMeter and it didn't seem to indicate overheating c.55°C
So far, I haven't been able to download the Lonovo updates, seems to get stuck in a loop at 17%.
However, this evening, things have much got worse and it now freezes at the Welcome screen, it won't even boot up now in Safe Mode. Now I'm stuck!

Product: ThinkPad R60e 0657-4UG
Original description: Celeron M 410(1.46GHz), 512MB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 15in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVDRW, 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
Not a machine that is prone to overheat.
On this Lenovo page you will find all info for your R60e incl. drivers etc.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ry=06574UG
Once you have downloaded a driver, and double-clicked it, all it does then is extract files somewhere into c:\Drivers\xxxx
You also need to go to that 'extracted' directory and run the setup.exe from there!
If you try to run System Update: this is NOT working until further notice (from Lenovo).
Maybe best to manually D/L the missing drivers onto another PC, burn them on a CD and use that to install on the laptop.

Just throwing some ideas.
How much RAM is installed? Have you tried memtest+ to rule-out the memory?

Re: R60E Freezes after reformat......?
Thanks everyone, it looks like I'm going to have to do another clean install. On the question of downloading updated drivers from Lenovo's website, there seems to be loads of them! Which do I choose?
Thanks again,
Lagoonius

Re: R60E Freezes after reformat......?
If you can do a recovery from either the recovery partition or the discs, I say do it that way. Then if it doesn't work you know you've got a hardware issue somewhere. If you saved the SWTools folder all the drivers should be in there. If they work why update?
