T42 Screen scrambled--what's loose?

#1 Post by mellowmelon » Fri May 01, 2009 12:39 am

Hi all,

I've searched on the forum and haven't seen this same problem. I'm seeing lots of horizontal lines on my screen, but no discoloration or going black. Has nothing to do with startup/shut down. It comes and goes, and goes away if I push hard on either side of the track pad, making me think something is loose... what could this be and is there something I can do about it? It's been over a week and only getting more frequent.

I've tried plugging it into another monitor and the image is clear on the other monitor, still scrambled on my laptop. Here are a couple of pics of the scramble: http://picasaweb.google.com/vjackson/T4 ... 0209120050 http://picasaweb.google.com/vjackson/T4 ... 6591156770

Everything else works great--3.5 yr old T42, i've added more memory but it's still slowing down, but this screen problem doesn't seem related to anything else.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

If you can make it go away by pressing down to the left of the touch pad, it is likely a loose GPU. Read thru the sticky above related to that.

Slowing down is likely related to Windows Registry needing clearing or the HDD need defragmentation.
