T500 freezes correlated with 'disappearing' DVD drives

#1 Post by jeanluc » Fri May 01, 2009 9:32 pm

A few minutes ago, for about the 10th time since I bought a T500, the laptop suddenly froze for more than a minute (completely unresponsive, mouse cursor not movable and so on). Then it came back alive as if nothing happened. Until a few days ago I thought it was a buggy Active Protection System (like other readers have suggested on this forum) and I had APS disabled (the laptop is sitting on my desk anyway). However, now I had the inspiration to check the event logs immediately after the freeze and found the following entries (most recent at the top) showing two things: first, that the 'connection' with the DVD drive had been lost for a short while (corresponding to the duration of the freeze) and, strangely, log entries from the wireless software. After some googling I haven't found a good explanation for the latter.

The first one seems to indicate a real connection problem or an intermittent controller failure (I have other problems that seem to be caused by the HDD or the controller, rather, they are described at http://forums.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=76037).

At this point, I'm just posting this information as I've seen other people complaining about the freezes. I suspect it's not a cable issue as the laptop is pretty imobile, I've seen it freezing even when using an external keyboard and mouse so there was zero contact with the laptop.

Remove the dvd drive to see if the freezing still occurs.
