FS: X31, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB 5400rpm HDD, warranty, new pictures

Hi all,

this laptop is more concretely for sale than my other thread in the marketplace right now. It was originally mine and recently my sister's been using it. She's looking to upgrade and we thought to offer the machine for sale while it's still under warranty.

The laptop is a 2672-C2U and the original description is: P M 1.4GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB 4200rpm HDD, 12.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 16MB ATI Radeon M6, Wireless upgradeable(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 10/100 Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip(TCPA), IEEE 1394, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

It's been upgraded to 1 GB of RAM, 802.11b (wifi-b) mini-PCI, and a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 80 GB hard drive. A while back I ran hdtune, screenshot with results: max transfer rate 44.2 MB/s, average 34.5 MB/s, burst 75.7 MB/s, access time 15.9 ms.

There is no COA on the laptop. It might come with a version of Ubuntu installed on the hard drive, but please assume it'll only be fit for a wipe and installation of your OS of choice.

edit: due to geographical separation, this is no longer possibleI can include an Intel wifi-G mini PCI card with the laptop. It's the right type physically, but I've never gotten around to installing it since buying, so I am unable to guarantee it is not DOA or won't give the BIOS error. If you want it, feel free.

There are two smallish pressure spots on the screen, visible mostly on light backgrounds. There is also some dirt/damage at the bottom of the screen, due to which a row or two of pixels appears dark for a short length. I'm not quite sure what it's been caused by; it was like that when I first got it. They are where the Windows taskbar would be if you have your taskbar at the bottom of the screen. In my personal opinion they are not at all distracting especially with the taskbar there.

The laptop's five year warranty is coming to an end on 2009-05-27. There is an unusual situation in that the S/N sticker is missing from the base. The serial number can still be read from within the BIOS. I asked about this on the Lenovo forums; see Mark_Lenovo's answer for yourself. For what it's worth, I had no problems at all receiving service (keyboard replacement) a year ago, but although I don't think it should be a major problem, I am unable to guarantee your depot won't give you a hassle.

I will hopefully be able to get pictures up shortly.

Asking 234 USD + actual shipping of your choice.

edit: uploaded pictures, all except one are 400 kB or smaller.

hdtune results, ran on this machine

battery 1 (better)
battery 2 (worse, laptop will come with both)

outside angle view: this is the best shot I could get of the cover. They're pretty difficult to photograph. As you may be able to see, there are no major scratches, but you can tell the laptop is not brand new
right edge: somewhat of a bad picture, and I apologize. You can see the rubbery finish rubbing off at the corners - rather inevitable on a five year old laptop
left edge: same deal as above
bottom: you can see the missing stickers. The paint is flaking off from the memory cover, but this should be a trivial replacement which you might even get under warranty and which in no way affects functionality. One of the batteries is missing its feet, the other one has them.
back: your standard X31. The finish on the top is mostly sensor noise in this picture
open view: glare from an overhead light, but there you go. Both lid latches are fine, the thinklight works as advertised, and the hinges are stiff.
left side: again, standard X31 fare (please ignore the wall behind...)
keyboard: replaced under warranty in April 2008
left angle (the shine under the fn and ctrl keys are reflections from the light)
right angle: note that the HDD bezel is non-IBM as the original broke and I got a replacement off ebay without bothering with warranty. It sticks out a tiny bit, but works perfect.
screen pictures, I apologize for the quality but I'm not quite sure of the best way to photograph LCD screens without getting them looking unnatural:
lower right corner: most severe LCD dust. Note the scale with the status LEDs and the standard-sized Ubuntu folder icons,
lower centre: this is basically the extent of the dust issue
most noticeable pressure spot (500 kB), a bit below the cursor. This was the best picture I could get, but in person the issue is visible but not obtrusive. Location is where the screen meets the trackpoint, if you are persuasive you might get a screen replacement based on this.
lower right angle / IBM logo: the marks on the palmrest are dust and noise, not scratches. The X31 has a hard plastic palmrest that doesn't scratch unless severely impacted.

Wow, good price, I'm tempted, what would economy shipping to the USA cost? Someone please grab this so I don't. ;-)
