X31 vs T-Series

#1 Post by Txiasaeia » Sun Jun 06, 2004 11:05 pm

Can anybody comment on the X31 vs any T4x machine, specifically on the keyboard and display? I'm looking for a typing machine for the next few years, but haven't decided which one I want more. I like the weight of the X31, but I also like the screen size of a T4x. Is there much difference between the keyboards? I've been wavering between the two for the past month and still haven't decided. Any help would be appreciated!

The X31 comes with a 12.1" XGA LCD screen while the T4x comes with a 14.1" or 15" XGA, SXGA+, or UXGA LCD screen. The keyboards are essentially the same. I know of people who get headaches trying to use 12.1" XGA LCD screen so the best thing to do is go to a local computer store and try out a laptop that has a 12.1" XGA LCD screen (look for the ultra-thin models from Sony, etc.,) and see if it's too small for you to use comfortably.

How about the quality of displays? Any difference between the 12" and 14.1" screen itself? I can't find any local computers that have a 12" screen, let alone an IBM (besides my wife's old 300c :) ), so I'm flying a little blind here.

In terms of picture quality, the 12.1" XGA and 14.1" XGA are very similar (contrast, brightness, viewing angle). The 15" XGA is brighter. The other screens will appear sharper just because of the higher resolution. The 15" SXGA+ and 15" UXGA are much brighter, have higher contrast, and wider viewing angles.

Some have noted that the 14.1" SXGA+ screen is not very impressive. There are apparently several versions of the screen from different manufacturers.

having used (and currently using) an X-series 12.1 and having owned a T22, T41P, and T42P..

keyboard will be great. just as comfortable to type on as the T-series. They reduce the size of some keys (ctrl, alt, packspace, enter)...but that never bugged me.

Screen:

a 12.1" XGA will look better to you than a 14 or 15 XGA will. Screen quality is good as well. plenty bright for watching DVDs (unless you have sunlight on the screen).

I wouldn't worry about size too much; I'm currently 2' away from the LCD(laptop keyboard + PS-2 keyboard + forearm length), and the screen is quite readable.

The T42P is the best laptop I've ever had the privelage of working with...but I keep the X31 around and am very happy with it as well. (I would have gone for an X40 if i had waited just a month longer)

Thanks for all the advice! I'm currently typing on my brand new X31; the screen is amazing, the keyboard is really nice and the entire package is tight and very attractive. Thanks again!

Why will a 12" XGA look better than a 14" or 15" XGA???

The smaller display means the pixels will be smaller, making a sharper image at the native resolution. Also might appear brighter since the backlight has to light a smaller area, depending on how powerful the ones in the larger display are.

At the right angle, my 12.1" XGA looks brighter and crisper than my 19" CRT running @ 1024x768 (I know, I know, but I'm really hooked on the 100Hz refresh rate)
