Start up delays / time
Start up delays / time
I am running a T40 with XP Pro.
It seems to take forever to boot all the junk and fill the icons on the desktop.
I have turned off everything I can in the startup choices. However, still slow as heck. There is a bunch of of IBM related software in the start up sequence, but I don't know what is safe to turn off.
Any suggestions for quicker boot?
Thanks, as always

You might want to try updating Access Connections. SP2 does fix the 60/120 second network seek boot delay, but ironically it only does so if WZC is enabled. A lot of people (me included) are running SP2 with Access Connections without any problem (and without boot delays), so hopefully you should be able to as well.mattfromomaha wrote:My T30 used to boot very quickly, but when I installed WinXP SP2 the Wireless Zero Config service had to be disabled because it fights with access connections, and when it's disabled it adds over a minute to the total boot time...[censored] Micro$oft...
As for the OP, exactly how long is a "long" boot cycle? These things are subjective, and we need to know if you're talking about 40 seconds or 3 minutes before you get control of your desktop, and when the boot process finishes. Also, we don't know how many boot processes you have enabled or what programs startup automatically on boot.
I'm thinking you probably have a bunch of apps that startup with your computer, and potentially some malware as well. Might be good to download Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware, CWSShredder, and Microsoft Antispyware and see what comes up.
Otherwise, run msconfig from the start menu and turn off all programs you don't need on startup. Also, as the last poster recommended, get Microsoft Bootvis and optimize your boot sequence.
Lastly, if you haven't run a defrag in a while, do that (Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter).
Good luck!
