Is it a clean install of Vista or a factory image from Lenovo? If this happens under the factory image, the laptop is probably eligible for a check according to its warranty. Also, look for driver and BIOS updates on Lenovo website that may address hangs/lockups under Vista (x64). What model is the SSD in this X301?

I agree with Marin. My Vista 64-bit system is rock solid, and I used the Preload to get stated. With respect to the USB port replicator, I got one of these (Lenovo) from my vendor and promptly returned it. Not worth owing in my opinion.

do you use the original build from lenovo and their utilities or have your removed anything?
Today I removed ALL think utilities except the hard disk active protection utility and its running much better. it seemed that windows vista 64 and think utilities were fighting with each other causing slowness and problems. i just upgraded the bios also and cleaned up some disk space. since it has a SSD 128gb drive i am wondering what directories I can remove.

can i delete the c:\drivers directory safely. (i am pretty sure i can)
what about the c:\swtools\
there is another dir I cannot remember maybe c:\swutils (or something like that)

I found there is nearly 8gb in these dir's. It would help a lot to get back the space.

Thanks for any updates.

Well, swtools and swutils don´t belong to Vista in any way. Since you have uinstalled most of the thinkvantage bloatware, I don´t see a reason why you would need that folders on your system (unless you´d like to reinstall some of those tvt applications).

@johnp126 - I have most of the Lenovo utilities installed (because I used the Preload). They do not slow down my system at all or fight with each other. They do have their problems, but hurting my system is not among them. I use the Preload because it is simply vastly faster to preload and uninstall 3 things, than to install clean and install 2 dozen (plus or minus) required and useful things. ... JDH
