Security Chip password not working after motherboard switch

#1 Post by jrcade » Tue May 05, 2009 8:37 pm

I recently had to send my laptop off for repair and IBM replaced the motherboard. With the old motherboard installed, I had some files encrypted through the Embedded Security Chip system. Now, with the new motherboard, I can no longer get the computer to accept the passphrase I had used with the old motherboard.

Bottom line...is there any way to reset the passphrase so I can decrypt and open those files now? If not, is there any other means of accessing them?

Thanks for any help!

Call IBM Tech Support if you don't get an answer here.

Are you talking about what lenovo/IBM calls "full disk encryption"? Is the disk also password protected? (recommended) If so, I assume you had passphrase set on the old machine. Start the machine without the HD installed and boot into the BIOS. Go to security and set passphrase on. Hit F10 to save the changes, get out of the BIOS and turn the machine off. Install the HD and try again.

No, I am only talking about the password to encrypt files. I have no password set for the hard drive. Thanks!

Do a Google with "decrypt password protected files"
Depending on the type of files, you may find a/the solution there.

Other question: does the laptop accept ANY passphase/password at all?
If so set that to whatever (write it down), then reboot the TP. Check if that PW still works.
If yes, now make the change to your old PW. That should be accepted. Reboot and check.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
