Will AIX install on a 770Z?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

Will AIX install on a 770Z?

#1 Post by Bookworm » Wed May 06, 2009 3:33 pm

The PC version of AIX supposedly requires the PS/2' Microchannel architecture. I understand some early ThinkPads had it, but does the 770Z? Is there a later version of AIX that doesn't require Microchannel?

I know this an old post, but I thought after a few years it could finally be answered.

There was a port of AIX for PS/2 and it had support for the ThinkPad's until they pulled it in 1993 to focus on Power architecture.
However, it installed on several other vendors desktops and notebooks of the time.
Myself, I actually physically installed it back in 1990 on a P70 for COMDEX that year.

The main issue is the OS recognizes hardware of that time period and that's about it. It is possible to run as a VM, but I've only been successful with using a couple of layers of vitalization (win7-32bit VMware workstation guest with Virtual PC 2007 SP1 running AIX PS/2) to obfuscate the modern CPU and chipset.
