New T42: CD Drive wont open :?

#1 Post by RS_003 » Mon Jan 31, 2005 2:30 pm

Hello,

I just own a T42 for 2 days now, but of the 6 cd’s I have had in my T42 it 3 times did not wanted to open when I pressed eject. It doesn’t matter if I use the windows commando or the blue button. I just wont open.

Only if I pull the whole thing out of the T42 … and then I place it back. Then it does opens, but then windows doesn’t see the cd-drive anymore. So I am stuck @ an installation when I need to insert cd 2… And then I need to reboot.

Bug or defect?
Happy whit it? Certainly not.

Stuck CD Drive

#5 Post by Sasha » Tue Feb 01, 2005 3:42 pm

Hi RS_003

I have recetnly purchased a Thinkpad and had the same problems as you do (CD_RW/DVD Combo HL GCC-4242N). I called up IBM support today and they are shipping me a new drive.

Once the new drive comes in, I will post an update

Man, does IBM provide service or what??? Called them yesterday about a stuck CD....no questions asked, no explainations......they said they gonna ship me a new one....and guess what.................I got the new drive today at 10:00 AM........absolutely blew me away.........my experiences with Sony and Dell gave me the heebie-jeebies......

If I am gushing a bit too much, please forgive me...... First time IBMer...

Now, I had a Hitachi GCC-4242N earlier...the replacement is Matshita UJDA755y....(is this better than the original drive :?: )tried ejecting it mebbe 10 times or so...a litttle tight, but ejects everytime....

will post an update about the CDRW drive after some more time.....

Hats off to IBM Service

I have new 2378 with the UJDA755y drive. It ejects everytime with a simple button press. However, I notice that the tray only ejects about 1 inch. "Tight" maybe...? I have had other laptops that ejected far more, say 3-4in, almost completely extended. But this is fine.

I also created a keyboard shortcut which works perfectly.

CD drive not opening

#9 Post by ggaramond » Wed Feb 02, 2005 12:07 pm

I've seen this on my own system. Seems that the screw on the bottom, right where the edge of the CD rom drive, can get over torqued. I just loosened mine some and drive started opening correctly.

#11 Post by Sasha » Sat Feb 05, 2005 9:23 pm

:( ...Going by what you say RS_003, there's every chance that my CD drive can be stuck again!!!!!!

Till now, no probs (touchwood) except for the first time, which I attribute to the newness of the drive.....

Whatever, being a first timer, I am ecstatic with my Thinkpad.... :D

My new madshitter gave up on me...

Now I am getting a new brand ...

And if that doesn't work ibm says my ide controller could be bad.
Or the connection between the drive and the controller...

But the eject button is located on the drive it self?

So i don't believe that ... and I can't mis my laptop for 15 days (waiting time :( ) so anyone has some advice if the new drive still works like **** ? :)

I had the same problem on several Thinkpads. Just ininstalled DLA (Drive Letter Access) and the problems went away.

You should see it in your Add/Remove programs. For some reason, that piece of software is locking the door to the CDRW. After uninstalling, I've seen no loss of functionality and the door works perfectly.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

The CD drive eject button failed on me once or twice when I was installing MS Streets & Trips after getting my T42 in March. I e-mailed IBM support with this problem and they told me to use a paper clipper to insert in the small hole to the right of the blue button. I was hoping if they would send me a new drive but the paper clipper trick worked fine, and never had the ejection failed again.

Yes, but I paid premium (3000+ euro) so ffs I want a good working system

And it happened more than twice on me ... rather like eight out of ten times

Workaround

#19 Post by lovepup_98 » Wed Jun 01, 2005 3:58 pm

Hi there,

I've been browsing through the T Series forum for over a year. This will be my first post. As to the intermittent ejection issue, it's actually a known issue as documented on the IBM support site. It's a problem with the DLA.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-58908

Hope this helps. I myself own the 2378-REU. Once I disabled DLA, I don't have the problem anymore.

Thanks lovepup_98,

I was trying to resolve this issue by un-installing DLA. The net result was a machine that would only boot to a BSD. This was much simpler.

Just noticed if for some reason you don't want to uninstal DLA. Go to my computer and uncheck "use with DLA" and that works also.
