X200s broken ethernet jack

#1 Post by Charles Krug » Wed May 13, 2009 10:48 am

An ethernet cable was yanked out of an X200s (74663JU). It took out the detent or whatever it is that retains the plug. The connection still works, and for now RJ45 plugs fit snugly enough. However, I'm sure this will eventually become a problem (plus it happened while I setting up the brand new machine!).
Is the jack an FRU or will the unit need to be sent off for repair? I may have an old X series available for parts, though I expect the machines have little in common. Thanks!

If you have the Thinkpad Protection, Lenovo should repair it at no cost.

I noticed some time ago that an otherwise intact cable does not "snap" into the ethernet port of my X200 Tablet.

My conclusion was that this is a design feature, not a bug, in that you won't send your machine flying when you trip over the network cable. C.f. apple "magsafe" plugs.

Unfortunately, I didn't purchase the ThinkPad Protection, and I'm sure the standard warranty doesn't cover this. Seems like I would have noticed right away if the ethernet plug didn't snap into the jack. Has anyone else noticed if this feature is on the notebook as well as on the tablet? Thanks,
Jim

There is no such "feature" on the X200s. It has a standard Ethernet jack, and the plug snaps into it.

I wish my issue was as simple as this.. somewhere in the process of using my x200, and honestly, treating it rather gingerly, The little piece of bottom case that goes across the top of the port.. disappeared... I have a feeling Lenovo won't replace it as it's external case damage- even though I've never dropped, hit, etc this system since I got it...
Any thoughts?

On the topic of the ethernet jack not clipping- one of my macbooks also lost that same little internal bar that the cable clips against... Apple was happy to replace it (ok, maybe happy isn't the best word- willing?), so I'd expect the same of Lenovo

Guys, call Lenovo and ask. You might be suprised on what they will do. No point speculating if they would replace it cause that won't get it replaced for sure. If you call them and ask, worst thing is you get a 'no' answer, which is no worse than it is now.
