Random Laptop Weighing - T60 14"/15", X61, X61T, DELL D420

So, for fun I was playing around with a bunch of laptops and my friend's baby scale, which is supposed to be 10g accurate. Not sure it's actually 10g, but I'd say that its accuracy is at least 30g~1oz.

Here is what I measured:

X61 w/ 4 cell: 1.4kg/3.08lb
Latitude D420 w/ 4 cell: 1.45kg/3.19lb
X61 w/ 8 cell: 1.6kg/3.52lb
X61 Tablet w/ 8 cell: 1.9kg/4.18lb

Quite a bit weight difference between the Tablet and the non-Tablet. The D420 actually felt lighter than the X61, I was surprised to see that it was even a bit heavier on the scale.

T60 14" w/ 6 cell: updated, see below
T60 14" w/ 9 cell: updated, see below
T60 15" w/ 6 cell: updated, see below
T60 15" w/ 9 cell: updated, see below

On the scale the 15" is noticeably heavier than the 14", although when held up, it is almost impossible to feel the difference between the 15" with the 6-cell and the 14" with the 9-cell. The difference in thickness is more pronounced (all of it comes from the LCD lid, since the base are the same thickness between the 14" and the 15").

Just the batteries:

X61 4-cell: 200g/7.05oz
X61 8-cell: 400g/14.1oz
T60 6-cell: 300g/10.6oz
T60 9-cell: 450g/15.9oz

So the battery weight seems to be pretty linear in cell count - 50g per cell. All these batteries have same cell capacities too - 9.36Wh per cell.

It would be cool if he had some database of recorded laptop weights, don't you think?

Interesting read. As I only have a T60/14.1"/9c it allowed me to see how it compares to the X models or how much weight would I loose by getting a 6c battery.

I would go even further, a database of detailed info about various ThinkPad configurations and their accessories (batteries) including weight and an easy to use tool to compare them side by side would be awesome.

Great research...it seems to me that the bottom line is "if you want a lightweight (in more ways than one) you don't buy a ThinkPad"... :D

Got myself a sensitive digital scale, and retook the measurements of my laptops. I don't know which scale is the more accurate, but probably the digital, which would make the laptops a bit lighter than I thought. Here are the new numbers:

14" T60
No battery, empty ultrabay: 1.81kg / 3.99lb
No battery, multi burner: 1.97kg / 4.34lb
6-cell battery, multi burner: 2.28kg / 5.03lb
9-cell battery, multi burner: 2.44kg / 5.38lb

15" T60
No battery, empty ultrabay: 2.13kg / 4.69lb
No battery, multi burner: 2.28kg / 5.03lb
6-cell battery, multi burner: 2.61kg / 5.75lb
9-cell battery, multi burner: 2.77kg / 6.11lb

Use your X41 with 4 cell battery when you want to go "portable"! It's lightest your first post shows!
