Cheap SSDs on eBay: any problems?

#1 Post by John H » Wed May 13, 2009 5:41 pm

I see a lot of rather cheap SSDs on eBay that might work since they specify PCI-E, but they also mention Dell, such as: "16GB SSD for Dell Mini 9 STEC PCI-E". Can they be used to pep up my old T40 by putting my systems on the SSD?

I don't think they'll work. I've been looking at that myself, hoping someone would make an adapter for IDE connections. There are some of those PCI-E SSDs that are labeled "PATA" so a converter of some kind might work. The PCI-E description is just for the physical socket layout. The pinouts are different.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

The Transcend (and others) 32GB MLC SSD can be had at Newegg for under $100. I have one in a X30 and it is pretty fast. Should work in a T40 also. Look for my "Benchmark" post in the X2x, X3x, X4x forum.
