Need a different fan for a T41

#1 Post by Microspeed » Thu May 14, 2009 11:34 pm

I recently upgraded my processor to a SL7EM on my T41. I did not upgrade the fan and it does seem to running. When under full load I get a warning from TPFC. I did clean the old grease off the fan and replaced it with some AS. (Although admittedly it was a few years old.) I am thinking I should get a long fan for it. I have looked on ebay and few other sites and have found several different long fans. Some saying they are for a T41. I also remember reading a post where someone said you could use a Long fan from a T43 in any T4X TP and that it was the best way to go. However there also appears to be different Long fans for that model as well. I have done a search for Long fan threads but cant find it again. Bottom line, could someone suggest which fan I need to get? I really don’t mind fan noise so that is not an issue.
Once I figure out which one I need, I'll post a WTB in the marketplace.

Thanks

Search for 41W5204 ... it is the newer version of the long fan that a lot of users here like.

I replaced the short fan in my T40 with the 41W5204 long fan when my short fan became noisy to the point of screeching. I also replaced the 1.5 Banias processor with a 1.7 Dothan at the same time. My 7500 GPU doesn't need a long fan but it seemed like a better option than putting in another short fan ... the price was very good at the time for a new 41W5204.

You don't need the long fan if your computer didn't come with one. The long fan does nothing to help cooling the CPU (it cools the GPU). I've had 2 T4x computers with the 2GHz CPU and the short fan and they get hot under full load, but never overheat. Make sure you fan is operating at the correct speeds - is it plugged with dust? Is the heatsink properly seated on the CPU?

I am pretty sure it is correctly seated and I thoroughly cleaned the fan and ports of dust. I do not know what the correct speed should be. According to TPFC top speed is roughly 4100 rpm. What kind of temperatures did you have under full load? Mine will set off the warning every time. (176 – 180 F)
