T40 dying
Hi guys
Sorry to bother you all with this, but my old T40 started playing me up this morning.
When I switch on, the lights go on, but nothing appears, no IBM access screen, nothing.
Oddly enough on about the fifth or sixth attempt it did; got as far as the Windows splash screen but froze there, since then zilch.
Any ideas, help gratefully accepted.
Best regards
Tony

Use another machine to connect to the internet and download PC Doctor (DOS bootable) from here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-56222
When you have made a DOS bootable CD, put that CD in your T40 and boot the machine. You can then do all sorts of tests.
I suspect you may have a hard disk problem and PC Doctor will be able to confirm that ... or make my assumption look stupid.
Good luck, and let us know what results you get.

Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.
Dogs must be carried on the escalator. Where can I find a dog?

You might want to look here --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=33952
There is a very good chance you have a loose GPU. To confirm, just keep pressure on the plastic bar between the space bar and the mouse buttons before powering on. Keep the pressure on until the machine fully boots. If releasing the pressure and/or movement or flexing the machine causes it to freeze, you've got a very common motherboard GPU failure.
You can then look here for repair --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=73945
Or here, to try to fix it yourself --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=57021
Or here, for another solution --> http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=65505

Yes, that's the problem, many thanks for your time and trouble. I'll have to think about how to get it fixed.
I emailed Nick but unfortunately he's closed for holidays till next week.
Best regards
Tony
