any way to fix broken tabs on ethernet socket?

#1 Post by flyingsherpa » Sun May 17, 2009 7:08 pm

I recently picked up an X60s off ebay and it's been great. But this weekend I noticed that I couldn't plug an ethernet cable into the laptop's socket... it would go in but not "click" into place. The socket on the ultrabase works fine. After some close inspection and comparing it to sockets on my router, I see that there are little tabs in a normal socket that engage the clip on the cable. These tabs are broken off on my X60s. Probably a fairly common occurrence when an ethernet cable gets yanked... the tabs aren't very thick.

I'm a fairly handy guy but I can't figure out a good way to fix this. Anyone have ideas or experience with this problem? I guess it's not a critical issue because the socket on the ultrabase works, and of course wifi works fine, but I'd like to fix it if possible. Thanks!

Those sockets are big, and mainboards are delicate. I tried to take a socket off a PC300 desktop mainboard and was not successful in doing a clean job. I wound up installing a PCI network card. My advice would be to live with it and see, in due course, if you can get an X60s mainboard here or on eBay.
