WTB: Cheaper family thinkpad

Long story short, the family laptop (a Compaq) is dead. I tried to revive an old slow PII Dell--not cuttin' it. My new X61 is changing hands so much I know something's going to happen to it. :S So! What better to do than buy an older solid thinkpad fast enough to handle Chrome, Facebook, Yahoo, and Word?

Just looking around for ballparks.

What LCD size/resolution are you looking for?

What generation, in general...P3, P4. PM...Core Duo...?

What's the budget?

Any size, preferably at least 800Mhz processor, and whatever reasonable price the particular unit would go for. I'm just comparing options, seeing what's best for the price. (Repair would be $50 plus whatever repair costs, which would probably require a mobo replacement. It's pretty much scrap.)

I think you can get a top notch IBM T-level Thinkpad that is a couple of years old (not more than three) with a valid serial number, COA sticker, good (no blemish) LCD, and either (1) F11 / Blue Button recovery partition intact and known working or (2) bona fide IBM recovery CD's for a very reasonable price. Such a machine should service you well. (I do not have such a machine or I would offer) ... JDH

A recommendation I made to another recent inquiry is valid for your's as well (you can disregard the Dell recommendations);

Summary:
~$200 - Dell D600 or IBM R51 (Intel GPU)
< $250 - Dell D610 or IBM R52 (Intel GPU)
< $275 - IBM R60/R60e
< $300 - IBM R61/R61i/R61e

I have to stress, if you can find a sub-$300 R60 or R61, you should seriously consider it. These are modern, fast machines with newer batteries.
