Why we (X41T) should upgrade to Windows 7

#1 Post by thinkpadinside » Wed May 20, 2009 10:13 pm

Hey guys. If you have a little dough (I don't but I borrowed somebody else's to test) get a solid state drive, and put windows 7 on that baby. The tablet functions are so much more refined than XP. Xp was flat out blunt and not very friendly. Windows 7 makes a whole lot of difference, and speed is superb on ssd, and livable on stock hard drive. Just max out the ram, and you'll be okay. The only drawback to this is that we don't get vista aero YET! MS is incorperating a software render for it, so we may get the eyecandy too at some point. But I urge everybody to upgrade if your running an X41 Tablet. I know that I will never go back to XP after using 7. Try, im sure you'll like it!

When I get some time I would like to try Win7 on my X41 Tablet too.

What video driver did you use? I am sure the stock driver will play video too slow just like it does on a X41 laptop.

Does the rotate screen button work with that HP video driver?

FYI, there's a thread about X41T and Win7 over at GottaBeMobile.com which you may like to take a look...

I used all stock drivers from the IBM/Lenovo website. The hotkeys work and the tablet hardware buttons and video drivers all work when you download them from the web site. No need for HP drivers

There is a need for those HP drivers when a movie plays in slow motion. That HP driver was designed for Vista, while the IBM driver is designed for XP, so the HP driver seems to work better with Win7.

I'm running 7 RC on my X41T as well and it seems the only huge I'm really having is with rotation when I go into tablet mode. Detecting it is finicky and after the first time, it takes what feel like ages longer to change each time.

I've disabled the autorotate feature and just use the button.

Then there's the fact you can't really shut ClearType off even if it seems to be off and it looks like four brands of crap in any rotation position other than laptop mode. I have downloaded the ClearType Rotator utility, and it doesn't work in Win7 (didn't expect it to).

The dimbulb thing of it all is they try to use ClearType in portait modes so you've got an extra pixel being lit wrong for no reason.

Other than those things, I FREAKING LOVE IT. If they'll fix that stuff, I'll buy it, Aero or no. With 7, there's actually a real reason to upgrade from XP in this case.

Vista was ME 2.0 to me. I have a free license for Vista Ultimate and after Vista left a bad taste in my mouth, it sits idle, gathering dust as a [censored] child.
