T42 fan noise

#1 Post by dcouzin » Thu May 21, 2009 7:37 pm

My T42 fan has just begun to make intermittant rumbling noises. Can anyone estimate the time before fan failure? Is there anything I can do to prolong the life by two weeks or so? Thanks.

I don't know if it applies to the T4x fan assembly, but I've been able to prolong desktop computer fans by peeling the sticker off and pouring a drop of 3-in-1 oil in the lubrication well underneath. I've been able to restore rather noisy fans using this method. I've never really looked at the T4x fan though, so I don't know if it can be lubricated like this.

Try this graphite/oil solution recommended elsewhere on this board by forum member RealBlackStuff. Worked for me as well: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic52936.html

Plus, if it does fix the problem, the problem will be fixed for longer than 2 weeks.

Thanks for the lubrication suggestions. The T42 is still under warranty and the German IBM service center wouldn't react well to signs of my going in. After the warranty expires, I re-enter the DIY world. (Graphited lubricant on a high speed bearing?)
In BIOS I reduced the processor speed to minimum and the fan is now slower and not clattering. This may be the 2 week solution.

You can always replace the cpu fan assembly. I replacement mine on my T43 after 3years of almost continuous use as it started being noisy. Bought brand new from IBM , costed around $50 but well worth it!

dtakias, I agree that the trouble of assembly/disassembly, with heat sink grease application, washing clothes (if following Nork's advice) and all should be considered when deciding whether to lubricate or to replace. I think I can get replacement on warranty if I wait until it makes a good racket.
