T60p -- trying to get latest (modded) ATI driver on Win7

#1 Post by npish » Mon May 25, 2009 2:15 am

I've read through related threads in this forum, but haven't been able to find a clear answer to this quandary: I'm trying to install the latest ATI driver for the FireGL V5250 card on my T60p-- which at this moment happens to be version 8.583 (link here) -- and using MobilityModder, I can modify the drivers and install on Vista without issue; however, when using the same method in Win7, the Catalyst software installs correctly, however the install log reveals that the actual driver does not (and I'm left with the default version installed by Win7, i.e. v.8.561).

So, I'm wondering if anyone has managed to install a later driver version than 8.561 in Win7, and if so, what specific Catalyst package you modified to do so?

Thanks much in advance.

At first I tried this too and got the same issues - I uninstalled and ran WIndows Update which detected a GOOD working driver so it looks like we don't need to mod the generic install anymore :)

thanks for the response Oaklodge-- yeah, the WinUpdate driver is 8.561, which I think is still later than the version on Lenovo's site, kinda pathetic; do you by chance use Photoshop CS4 in Win7? if so, have you been able to use the GPU-enabled features without issue? I'm still debating whether to revert to Vista and wait for proper Win7 drivers...

ThinkPad T60p with ATI V5250 too.

Photoshop CS4 works like a charm with default drivers tested in Windows 7 beta x86 for 3 months and windows 7 RC x64 last 3 weeks.

When installed Win7 downloads a driver from windows update for video automatically.

hi Melvyn, thanks for the response-- curious, what drivers if any have you installed from Lenovo? and does your machine seem to run warmer with Win7? as I commented in another thread, it seems like the fan is on constantly in Win7, which was never the case with Vista...

Well,

I install Windows 7and everything get recognized by W7. Screen only shows 1400x1050 instead of 1680x1050. Without asking me W7 download and installe the following drivers from windows update:
* Infrared
* FingerPrinter
* Bluetooth
* ATI FireGL v5250

Optionally theese another drivers are in windows update:
* Conexant Modem
* ThinkPad PM
* Lenovo display (this is something of 40kb or 50kb, I don't remember)
* SoundMax Audio

That's all from windows update

I downloaded and installed the hard drive the active protection system from lenovo and the power manager from windows vista.

That was with the beta and the RC (downloaded from MSDN on may 1st).

Right now I'm going to install the drivers found in
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... =WIN7-BETA

Which appear to be new. Wish me some luck.

The base driver from windows update blows for the FireGL V5250 on T60p. Watching videos Full screen on YouTube invarialby results in a complete system lockup requiring a power cycle. ATI's site does not have the updated driver yet for this card, so using mobility modder is out. What Gives? Anyone find a solution to this problem? My wife is mad at me for upgrading her. :BAAAD!:

By now I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 from MSDN, with all drivers from windows update, only power manager from Lenovo's site.

I can watch youtube videos in fullscreen. Don't know if it gave troubles in RC because usually I don't watch full screen from youtube (1680x1050 is not friendly for low-res video).

Hmmmm, I was pretty sure it was the video drivers causing it... maybe it was something else. I'll recheck the event log and see if there's any more clues. It's pretty consistent though. Thanks for the feedback!

One thing you could check is your ati powerplay settings. I was having lot's of problems with windows 7 aero stuttering on my T60 x1300 and found out that my powerplay setting were set on max battery and not max performance. Changed settings and now aero is smooth and fast. I have also notcied that my laptop is a little hotter and fan runs all the time now compared to vista. My guess is that with the x1300 vista aero didn't need max powerplay setting to run smooothly but windows 7 does.

Also for anybody that does want to try newer drivers check this link out http://orestech.wordpress.com/2009/05/0 ... ty-radeon/ I have installed ati cat's 9.3 (8.591.0.0). Haven't noticed any real difference between them and the windows update drivers (8.561.0.0). My Aero score did go from 3.6 to 3.7 though.

Also just to confirm the latest catalyst drivers for my x1300 are the 9.3. The newer catalyst drivers don't support the x1300, x1400 etc.
