Overheating?

#1 Post by Czechnology » Mon May 25, 2009 1:52 pm

I've recently experienced a problem with my new Win7 installation that never happened before (while using Vista).

While going through some photos the laptop just halted and turned itself off. Then again and again when I've tried to continue working immediately after that.
Could it be overheating? The laptop seems pretty hot but I'm not sure how serious is that. I've found some ppl in Google complaining about overheating with Win7 but I couldn't figure out, if that's the case here.
Is there some app for checking TP's temperature (Win7 compatible)?

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Both TPFanControl (http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/donate.html) and Notebook Hardware Control (http://www.pbus-167.com/) run in Windows 7. You can use either (or both) to monitor/adjust temperatures.

For information on TPFanControl, see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=17715 and other threads in the utility sub-forum.

(My T41 is running about 1° warmer than it did with XP.)

I've got to 100 °C CPU temp just by counting SuperPi :o
And the normal temp when doing virtually nothing is between 60-70 °C and bounces easily up to 80 when doing anything...
I don't think that's normal :(

What can I do to solve it? Have I set something wrong or is there some Win7 issue?

Unless I'm sorely mistaken, it's not normal. My T41 with Windows 7 idles at about 43-44 for CPU and 46-47 GPU. It takes something severe to get above 60 and extreme to get over 80. Based on that, I don't think it's a Windows 7 issue.

Whether you've "set something wrong" depends on what adjustments you've made (BIOS and otherwise). You may want to raise the overheating issue in the T400 forum.

Guess I'll have to start up Vistas again and measure temp there (never did it as I've never experienced these unexpected power-offs there) to find out if it's an OS problem :(

hi Czechnology-- think I'm having the same issue on my T60; I barely ever even heard the fan with Vista, and upon installing Win7 I hear it constantly; TPFan shows the CPU at about 53 and GPU at 67 when idle; I also had the fan replaced on this unit a few months ago-- so given that I had no problems in Vista, it's most definitely Win7.

I'll also add that I just installed all the appropriate Win7 beta drivers posted on Lenovo's site-- looks like it's back to Vista for me until better drivers are released.

I think it got a bit better after installing the "Intel Corporation driver update for Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - Prerelease WDDM 1.1)" patch.
Now the CPU shows 47 °C and GPU about 50 °C (normal web+music work), sitting in the docking station (which i think is not very good designed for hot air circulation.
I'll see how it works in harder conditions.
