IBM-only Wifi Cards for Thinkpads?

#1 Post by Tsuioku » Tue Feb 01, 2005 8:28 pm

I'm upgrading from my X40 8EU to a T41P GGU.
The GGU only comes w/ a wireless b card so I'm thinking about swapping the wifi cards between the systems.

Will the BG card from my X40 be compatible w/ the T41P and vice versa?

Yeah, they should be compatible. Just a bear to get inside of the T41 since the wireless card is under the touchpad area.

Thx ggaramond :)

Just read in another forum that Thinkpads will only take wifi cards from other TPs or cards purchased directly from IBM...

Is this true for all models? If not, which models does this apply to?
I was thinking of purchasing another 2200BG card off ebay...

NOT without a bios modification:

I installed a new Intel Pro2915 ABG and works perfectly fine with the cmos hack.

That's good news. It means a BIOS upgrade is not required.

How do you like the new card? How does it compare with other mini-pci you have used?

I am kind of curious on how it performs. Especially when the 9.0 intel driver wasn't at all stable with 2200BG here.

Previously, i had the Intel Wireless Pro 2100 B card. Compared to that card, the new 2915 works a lot better, especially in areas with many overlapping networks. I think the B only card often got confused with the BG traffic.

So far, I have not tried any A networks.

What probs are you having w/ the 2200BG?
I plan on getting that card since ABGs are somewhat expensive and I don't know where I would need to use wireless A...

I got random disconnects using the v9 driver. Don't worry, version 8.1.0.28 is pretty solid and that's what I am using for 2200BG.
