TP600e - To Mod or Not To Mod

#1 Post by aldtech » Fri May 29, 2009 3:04 pm

I just recently got my 600e (366mhz) back from extended loan (2+ Years) and I'm itching to do something with it. Right now I'm testing out a few Linux distros on it with a WiFi card, no luck in getting that card to be seen let alone work.

I have a recently acquired T23 that needs a new screen (plastics and all) so I have been contemplating selling the 600e to cover the price of the replacement screen but I have been dieing to try the mods listed in this thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=4118 so I'm debating if it is worth it. If I keep the 600 it will be relegated to some Lunux OS so the question really is: will up grading the processor and performing the appropriate hacks keep it from functioning properly with Linux? Is anybody running linux easily on their modified 600e?

Thanks,

/ald

FWIW, I ran Linux PC OS version 2006 on 570 which is almost identical to 600e on the inside and was very, very pleased at the time.

As for T23 lid/LCD/etc these are fairly inexpensive items nowadays. If you post a WTB ad in the forum's Marketplace you may be surprised with how cheaply you'll get away with a tested good unit, unlike fleabay...
