upgrading HD in A31

#1 Post by clau » Tue Feb 01, 2005 11:39 pm

This must have been answered before, but I can't find it. I am trying to upgrade my HD from 40GB to a 80GB (IBM 5400 drive). I use Norton Ghost to copy the old disk to the new one. Copied OK, but the new drive would not boot up. I tried both copying the partition, and copying the complete drive. I am fairly sure that the recovery partition of the new drive is still intact. I need to figure out a way to make the new partition with the Windows XP files in it bootable. I can also use the recovery CD's to generate the factory image, but I don't really want to install all the applications again. Does anyone know how to do a disk copy correctly? TIA.

Use R & R instead of Ghost:

and

Ghost causes sometimes problems, though I don´t find the url now.

upgrading HD in A31

Hello Clau,

copying is just part of the job to be done, not all:

As far as I know, IBM does preconfigure the built-in hddrives as containing (at least) two partitions, one as a primary active (!) one and another (the recovery partition) as a primary and hidden (!) one.

You will have to use adequate tools to achieve this, too.

I have used acronis before and it worked very smothly. I have used drive image and partition magic (last published ones before symantec bought them) and it worked.

If You did not do that via ghost, the system will not recognize that a hdd to boot from is installed

happy trails

Thanks to Zeitgeist, I finally succeeded in cloning the drive. I used IBM's Rescue and Recovery. At first, I backed up to CD-R's, but after 20 hours or so into the process, the computer froze. So I got 19 coasters. However, the first boot CD it created is very useful. I then connected a USB hard drive, ran R&R and backed up about 20GB in less than 2 hours. Much better. When I put in the new hard drive, and booted with the CD created by R&R, it found the USB hard drive and it apparently loaded the proper USB2.0 drivers. There were some anxious moments when the program hung up, but the next time it ran all the way through and restored everything onto the new HD, and it rebooted successfully.

I also tried multiple times with Ghost, but could not make it work. Apparently some boot initialization was screwed up, and I was not able to fix that with the WinXP Recovery Console. BTW, the IBM technical help guy was clueless.

I paid more money for the new IBM HD because I thought I needed that hidden partition. Perhaps with R&R, any new drive will clone correctly. Maybe I should have gotten the 7200 rpm 60GB instead :).

Thank you for the feedback, you could have used also DVDs as backup medias.

Yes, you could have used any HDD, not only IBM (Hitachi) drives.

upgrading HD in A31

#6 Post by friedrich-eugen » Fri Feb 04, 2005 4:02 am

Hello Clau,

You must have screwed up with ghost!

I did an upgrade for a A31P from a 60GB/5400 to a 60GB/7200 IBM hddrive bought via ebay. It took about 30 - 40 minutes to copy all data and system (4Partitions, roundabout 40GB) via DriveImage to the new hddrive (ultrabay).

The only thing I found left was reconfiguring Zonealarm.

Obviously something was wrong with Ghost. I tried Disk-to-Disk copy, and Partition-to-Partition copy. I tried different switch settings (Image boot track, image all, default, etc.) The copy was successful, except that it would not boot :). I even tried Ghost with floppy and Ghost with bootable CD. Same results.

I read that before, and it's not clear if that applies, since I bought the A31 in early 2003, and I am not sure whether it has the WinPE RnR partition. It also says that the source and target drive must be the same size, which is not true in my case.

When I used Ghose, I did not create the image. I use a spare PC with two IDE cables and the notebook adaptors, so that I can connect one drive to the primary IDE and the other to the secondary. I ran Ghost from floppy or bootable CD. I tried both Disk-to-Disk copy and Partition-to-Partition copy. Perhaps I should have tried using Ghost with the USB hard-drive to store the image and follow the directions in that link.

I clone my HD on an A30P using Ghost 2003 by placing the second HD in an adapter so I can plug it into one of the Ultrabay 2000s. It is quick and successful. I gave up on other methods like the USB drive.

HDD Cloning...

I know that you must use a specific switch with the GHOST operation to insure that the special IBM boot track is properly reconstructured. Read the GHOST instructions for details, but I believe the switch is /ip. This aspect of using GHOST has been discussed on this website.

Good luck!

But it simply refused to work (hanged or end result didn't boot) until I stopped trying with ghost and used the free Western digital utility to mirror drives, without using any CD's.

that would work only if you can attach both HD's to the laptop at the same time, not via USB or external interface (Ultrabay and internal).

I am not sure if it would work with non-HD drives, however (for the target HD).

p.s. this wasn't for a thinkpad, but another brandname with a rescue partition and custom win2k image (HP).

you just have to configure it to copy the entire drive with all partitions.

the software is called Western digital Data Lifeguard, latest version is 11
