System Update is back!

#1 Post by BKthink » Sun May 31, 2009 8:53 pm

System update is operational again. Technically it's still May, so the prior "check back in May" message was accurate. I'm downloading a bunch of updates now...

Felipe,

You don't need a link unless the old TVSU is no longer installed.

Simply go to your exisiting TVSU link which should be in all programs under Thinkvantage Productivity Center. You will get a message to update your program.

Yep, it's back! as of Midnight, Asia time. Or maybe 11:59PM Asia time GMT+8. Fixed lots of problems from bad installs of older stuff.

Seems to work with Windows 7 RC1. My T60 got a bunch of updates. System Update saw my machine as a Vista unit, but heck, Windows 7 is just de-bloated Vista anyway....

Some items failed to install, others went on board fine...
Most of the fails were Windows Vista Update Modules

It's not supposed to work with Win 7 nor Vista SP2. Here's a quote from the "other" forum's admin: "I know that work on an update to handle Win 7 and SP2 Vista is already in the works and will see if we have a general timeframe in mind for release at this time."

I can attest that neither of my Vista SP2 machines could use TVSU, with it throwing an error message of typical Lenovo information "An Error Has Occurred". Meanwhile Lenovo doesn't even provide the kind of nebulous clue, i.e. "End of May", as to when Win 7 and Vista SP2 will get a TVSU client that works.

So this will be the reason why i am recieving the message " an error occurred while gathering user information". guess i will uninstall until a fix for Vista SP2 is released :(

Hmm.

For those who would know better: Is it very likely that the error produced when attempting to run it in Vista SP2 (+Win7) is the result of an actual unintentional conflict?

You can manually patch a XML file to allow the gatherer to run (that is the bit that is throwing the "error" message under Vista SP2) and it will the run, as I have tested it.

However, the rest of the new TVSU code does not have any checking to confirm that any particular Lenovo driver or ulitility (etc) will actually install/execute correctly under Vista SP2, so there may well be some unwelcome surprises in downloads if you go down that path.

Cheers,

very disappointed

#13 Post by Steve06 » Tue Jun 02, 2009 4:58 am

Again, I'm very disappointed of Lenovo!

My machine had Vista SP2 automatically installed by Microsoft Update. How can Lenovo bring out an outdated (b/c incompatible with newest OS version) version of their so called "new" update software? Do they expect people to still be running SP1.
How long will us SP2 users have to wait until we can use the new driver updates for our Thinkpads? The reason why many ppl bought a Thinkpad is b/c of System Update and the fact that you don't have to manually search and install updates.

Be reasonable, you don't have to update your drivers etc. every day, week or even month!

Geez, SP2 was officially released 1 week ago. Have some patience.
And yes, I am sure most people still run SP1.

The Vista SP2 RTM has been available to corporate users for several weeks now. :!:

I am getting feedback from the various user communities that I loosely support that the new TVSU is breaking on significant numbers of ThinkPads running Vista, so you "sure" assumption is flawed.

I do not think that corporate users constitute the majority of users. And many of these corporate users are still running XP.

Moreover, just because something is available, doesn't mean everyone automatically uses it.

Our IT department takes great care testing every new patch and service pack before deploying it. As for me personally, I don't install any service packs until they've been out for at least a few months.

So, yes, I am still sure most people are still running SP1. And that was in reply to the "Do they expect people to be still running SP1?" comment, not to the fact that Lenovo should take care of the compatibility problem ASAP.

It would be nice if you actually mentioned which of my statements in particular you consider misbeliefs, but I guess that would interfere with your typical concise straight-to-the-point "You're wrong" posting style.

I am aware that corporate environments are a very big customer of Thinkpads, but I do not think they are a majority. Could be wrong on this, though, seeing as Thinkpads are considered business machines. It would be interesting to see some figures on it...

With regards to them still running XP... Well, I never said "all of them", not even "most of them". But I do happen to be working at a very big corporation myself, with around 90%+ of the laptops being Thinkpads, and all of them still run XP. The IT department made a decision to skip Vista and go straight to Windows 7 a bit down the road.

I do not know whether the majority of customers are consumers or corporate. I don't bother with that statistic so I will not comment.

However, with regard to XP penetration vs. Vista penetration, I do agree with dr_st that the vast majority (80% or more) of these computers are still XP. Every statistic I see agrees with that. Vista in North America fizzled in the marketplace and now Microsoft is busy hurrying Windows 7 out the door.

well at least one statistic disagrees with you:

of course, no idea about the statistics for the thinkpad user subset of this data.

In fact there is a work around that makes TVSU to work on Vista SP2.
to make it work you need to go to
C:\Program Files\Lenovo\System Update\session\system\SSClientCommon
and open MappingInterface.xml with a word editing program
(make sure you have a bakcup incase somtehing goes wrong)

Scroll down untill you find

VS-BUS.SP1

Vista Business
Service Pack 1

Windows Vista

VS-STARTER.SP1

Vista Starter
Service Pack 1

Windows Vista

and add in between them a copy of

VS-BUS.SP2

Vista Business
Service Pack 2

Windows Vista

which is a copy of the top lines but instead of SP1 it will say SP2 and instead of Service Pack 1 it should say Service Pack 2

in the end the text shown in the beginning should look like

VS-BUS.SP1

Vista Business
Service Pack 1

Windows Vista

VS-BUS.SP2

Vista Business
Service Pack 2

Windows Vista

VS-STARTER.SP1

Vista Starter
Service Pack 1

Windows Vista

I got the infor here http://lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=239#comments

I tried it on my machine and now it works.

FrankL,

Surveys always say I can't see straight. I shall have to look again.

Eudoxus,

Thanks. That fix did work. It tells me my machine is up-to-date except for stuff I don't have installed on my machine.

A survey of the customers of Steam, which describes itself as “The Nexus of PC Gaming”, may not be an accurate reflection of the hardware/software being used in corporate/business environments.

Not to mention the fact that XP 32-bit is still the most popular OS there, with >50%.
