Why does my ATI X1400 Video Card indicate 512MB of vid ram?

#1 Post by Delmarco » Mon Jun 01, 2009 10:36 am

The specs on the box and manual of my 2008-CTO T60 read that I have 128MB video ram, but the Display Properties, Device Manager and DXDIAG all state that I have 512MB of video ram? I thought the X1400 was all dedicated and non shared memory, so how did I get 512MB from 128MB? Did the previous owner did some super video ram upgrade or am I missing something here?

X1400 can have up to 256M dedicated memory and use some amount of shared memory (ATI calls it 'hypermemory').
You can download GPU-Z to view exact config. of your card.

does this "hypermemory" give me ANY hard physical real world advantages in terms of gaming graphics or upgrading my XP Operating System to Vista Aero for example?

hypermemory does give you some advantage when there is complex graphics involved, i.e. 3D CAD design.
Current ThinkPad: T430u, T430s, X1 Carbon, X1, X230t, X220t, X230, X220, X201t, W520, W701ds, T500, T420 and many more
