Right, so we're gonna talk cars eh...

Can somebody PLEEEZ tell me why, when I push on the button to lower the drivers side window, the glass falls into the interior of the door?

I admit it's a very effective way of opening the window - but a real bugger when it comes to securing the car...

Maybe the car was made for James Bond, and that's the catapult window. Okay, seriously. Does it properly (seemingly) fit into the window frame? The only thing I can think is that the window is smaller than the original window, and it's not fitting into the frame properly. Because the frame on both its left and right side should hold it... I guess.

Sometimes its just a matter of the little plastic guides that slide in a track, have popped out....but usually the little plastic guides have broken off....usually easy enough to remove the door panel to have a peek...

What sensible replies - and I thank you both. No, in fact it's a serious design flaw by VWs engineers, and Golfs seem prone to this.

The mechanism just gives up - it cannot be repared, and June 18th VW France are paying to replace the whole thing. Doesn't this sound familiar? T4* fans etc.?

ian, if your golf window motor starts raising/lowering every 5 seconds and emulating a T4x fan then i think you will have a problem on your hands.   ;)

maybe your golf is [censored] at you.   did you put an "I (heart) MY UNO" or "HONK IF YOU LOVE UNOs" bumper sticker on her?   :P

out of curiousity, is your dealer replacing the window, motor/scissor mechanism, track, and everything?

NO BUMPER STICKERS (I'm NOT that kinda girl, sorry, guy)

The dealer is going to change everything bar the glass itself - from what I can establish. He would've done this today but didn't have the parts - this is going to cause problems in that we have toll roads in France (they're the fastest) and so I'm going to look a real jerk parking way over to the right of the toll booth to be able to actually get out of the car (oh my gawd) to pay the money....

in france, they have toll for everything.. or so it seems..
when i was there, with the redhead, we formulated a little chant:
"Payage, Payant, PayUP!" :P
i'm sure ian is familiar with these things..

as for cars, i just sold the 1983 Aston Martin Lagonda (at a loss, i'm sad to say) and made a deal for another 185 version with 11k miles..
yes, i said 11,000 miles total use in 19 years..
now, this means either these are terrible cars to drive or terribly unreliable to drive..
(see another thread talking about reliability)

BUT, i can say that, even this fine example of Joseph Lucas Electrics, when i push the down button, the window glides down..
it does not disappear with a clank into the interior of the door.. :D

*pats her Mk. 2 1987 Fiesta XR2*

Never failed me once. Including the glass. But then this doesn't have electric windows, pah, electric windows are for wimps :) hehe. There's nothing more heartening than me frentically winding down my window to yell out something to the *bzzzzzt transmission interrupted, hehe* who has just pulled out right in front of me.

Ahhh halcyon days.

Well except the time I locked the keys in the car. Or is that the times I have done so...

Oh and ran out of petrol once (literally 100 yards from the petrol station), which was a right pain, pushing a car along all alone by myself on the hard shoulder of a dual carriageway.

Damsel in distress syndrome? Bah. Miserable *transmission interrupted.... bZZZZZZt restored!* not wanting to help lil old me :)

Still got it there in the end!

For awhile, I thought we are going to start on how insecure MS Windows is ....

Perhaps Ian should have traded-in his UNO for one of these. According to Sir Richard it would make channel crossings sooo much more convenient :)

(Hopefully the windows are more reliable.)

Interestingly he left Dover an hour after I did - I was in a bloody great ferry complete with 150 screaming schoolkids - I think perhaps I should have waited for Branson...

I was in fact quite glad to leave England - the previous evening their national team had lost to France in Portugal - naturally I covered up my French number plates that evening!

You must have a VW. ;)

We have a 2002.5 Jetta and the passenger front window regulator failed (the clips break) causing the window to not come back up. The passenger window regulator was replaced under warranty and they replaced them on the driver's side as well.

After about 3 years VW has finally ponied up and is treating this as a warranty fix and they are even reimbursing people who had this problem prior to the warranty announcement, of course you will need your receipts to get the reimbursement.

Yup, a 2002 Golf IV - quite pleased apart from the window episode...

VW France didn't charge me for fixing (replacing) the mechanism, and after various forays into VW fora (!) I discover this is a very well documented 'fault' with the III and IV series - why the hell can't VW simply design or rather redesign the parts that break - surely this would be far less expensive in the long term.

Hasn't put me off VW's (yet...)

I also drive a VW (2003.5 gti). Fortunately for me my window regulators have not broken, so i believe they fixed the design flaw, but i know for sure that there was a recall here in the US for earlier models... not sure what happened in france.
