T30 1.8GHz always works at 1.2

#1 Post by pmx » Mon Jun 01, 2009 2:37 pm

HI, I just purchased a secondhand T30 which seems to have a strange problem:
there is a P4 1.8GHz processor, which runs only at 1.2GHz.

Windows and other software recognize it properly as a 1.8, speedstep is working but upto 1.2G only. I tried CPUMSR, it recognizes CPU's max multiplier as 18x but says it is locked at 12x.

It seems to be a factory setup (but not sure about that), BIOS recognizes the processor as a 1.8. There is 2.02 BIOS and 1.2 something-driver. Loading default settings does not help.

If nothing else, maybe I should put something like a Celeron 2.2 256/400, they seem to have a locked multiplier?

Thanks in advance for your help,
A20m and A31

Welcome to the Forum.
The CPU will only run at full speed, if you have both a working battery, AND the AC-adapter plugged in.
Also check the Power settings in BIOS and Windows.

Hello :)

I tried to set max performance in Bios and disable Speedstep, but it didn't help.

My battery is dead - windows shows 0% all the time :)

So that's the problem! It's strange it doesn't work at full speed when the computer runs on AC only.

Thanks!

My exact thoughts pmx. The T30 I bought off ebay shows I have a Sanyo battery. I don't know if that's an OEM compatible brand.

I have heard of the 1.2 ghz issue before. You just reminded me that I need a new battery :)

My Mobmeter shows that my CPU is at 1.8 ghz and my Battery Maximiser shows "red" for health.

I guess ol' Betsy must need a new battery soon eh.

install NHC - and set the speed from there
after of course in BIOS its set to maximum
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

I've never heard about NHC. It looks nice, I'll try that.

Meantime, I got a working battery and this indeed solved the problem.

Have you tried this on a T30 without a good battery? I had the same issue with the A31 and nothing worked except putting in a working battery.

on a T30 with bad battery never - but on a T4x or R5x with almost dead batteries - yes - an worked (the NHC that is..)
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G

Yeah, I haven't seen the issue in the Pentium M machines either-- with or without NHC. I'm trying out the theory that this "problem" is limited to Pentium 4M Thinkpads.

The dual core machines (T60/T61, and others) exhibit the same behavior of limiting CPU to minimum speed when no battery is attached and running off a 65W PSU. With 90W it's fine.
