Is Bluetooth "Optional" on the x301?

#1 Post by AHMIowa » Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:28 pm

Long time ThinkPad user - just received a new X301. In specifying my configuration needs to our university's Lenovo rep, we discussed the things that distinguished the various models. Based on my research using the TABOOK documents, industry reviews, and the lenovo web site, it was my understanding that all x301's had bluetooth along with the fingerprint reader.

Well, just realized that I can't seem to find the Bluetooth connection (which I have used in an x41).

Could this be just a software/driver issue, or is it possible that an X301 (Machine Type 2774) was shipped without bluetooth? Argh!

Thanks...

Seems to be a driver issue. All x301s ship with bluetooth.

Thanks...that's what I thought.

That makes it worth taking the time to figure out what's going on....!

Check my last thread... I couldn't find bluetooth in my connections either. I tore down the machine and the bluetooth daughter card was NOT installed. I did however have a wireless USB card (useless).

I ended up ordering one off eBay.

It looks like I may be in the same spot- and will see if Lenovo will fix it.

Seems to me that the Lenovo web site should make it clear that this is an optional component - if you go to the configurator, there is no CHOICE - bluetooth is shown selected. Apparently they can leave it off if they want. So much for a "standard" feature.

Wierd....

My system is a 2774-CTO machine (custom build). If yours is a CTO I would assume the same thing happened to you. Mine was a "refurb" (it was actually a new sealed system, bought it from ibmfactoryoutlet on eBay.) Have purchased 5 thinkpads from them and they are hit and miss. 3 came in perfect new condition, one was clearly used and "cleaned up". They described my x301 as having both bluetooth and a modem. It had neither.

Anyway - for the price I paid I can deal with the small screwups.

Mine is 2774-CTO. I guess this means that bluetooth isn't really as "standard" as everyone thinks, or as shown on Tabook.

It looks like the p/n missing is 43Y6481. Out of curiosity, how hard to install? The IBM/Lenovo docs don't classify it as a user-replaceable part, but that hasn't stopped me too much before. Still trying to get an answer back about swapping it for one configured as expected.

Wonder if I'm missing anything else "standard"?

Thanks,
Aletia

It is very easy to install - if you get the hardware manual (just google it) it gives you the instructions. Remove keyboard, remove palmrest and it is there.

I bought FRU 42T0969 on eBay since 43Y6481 was hard to find. I understand they are more-or-less the same.

I bought one from outlet and it did not have wireless. I looked into putting the hardware in myself but was told that I may have issues with it in BIOS not recognizing it as a genuine Lenovo part. I ended up returning it and getting another X301. I thought the bluetooth and wireless card are both difficult to install because its so new in the X301 and the P/N is different than the X300s.
