Slow Harddisk 5400 RPM on T22

#1 Post by cognacc » Wed Feb 02, 2005 12:52 pm

Hi

I got a harddisk said to be a 5400 RPM 32 GB harddisk in my T22 - 2647-AEU.
I have bought a 40 GB upgrade for my T20 also 5400 RPM(bought 2004 new) IBM Hitachi.

Part no:
the old 32 GB:? model djsa-232
the new 40GB:92P6545 model: HTS548040M9AT00

I wanted to test the two harddisks to compare speed.

I tested with HDTach 3.0
And the result was that the transfer rate for the new 40GB harddisk was twice as fast as the older unit.

Transfer rate(read) for 32 gb harddisk was about 14.8 MB/s
Burst rate: ~31 MB/s
Random access seek time: 16.5 ms

Transfer rate(read) for 40 gb harddisk was about 27-28.~ MB/s
Burst rate: ~32MB/s
Random access seek time: 17.8 ms

I wonder about that huge speed difference. thats not normal.
Does anyone have any suggestions what can cause this big difference, and if there is a way to solve it.

In my opinion i might expext the old drive to be a little slower than the new one, but not a factor 2.

Well there are many factors to consider in hard drive speed. The RPMs of the drive are just one aspect. Another aspect to consider is the interface of the drive. I'll bet your older drive uses an ATA/66, whereas the newer one probably uses an ATA/100 or even ATA/133, where the larger number represents faster data transfer.

Hey thanks for the answer

I checked it out as i can se my old drive djsa-232, has a ATA-4 spec.
While the newer drive has ATA-6.

That means ATA-33 -> ~33 MB/s interface
ATA-100 -> ~100 MB/s interface

The number i have for the 40 GB harddisk by the way is wrong, the number i listed is the FRU number, the part number is 08K9816.
(i'm a bit confused now, so please correct if wrong).

So that could be it, very likely also from these numbers.
Would anoyne else make a benchmark if they still have an old drive and post it here?
