T41 Hard Disk Replaced, Wireless does not work

#1 Post by yorkierich » Sat Jun 06, 2009 4:57 am

Hello, I am new to the forum and really happy with my T41 until the HD crashed, I replaced it but now I can only see the HW in Device Mgr and it gives the message; This device cannot start. (Code 10).

I used Driver Magician to see if that would help but it only sees it in Unknow Device Driver Detector;
Detected Chip Name: PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter.

I have Widows XP installed and can get on the internet with cable connection.

I would be so grateful for help as I am stuck without wireless when I use it for work, but please go easy on me as I am not highly technical...........

Welcome to our Forums.
You're talking about an Intel wifi card.
Driver can be found here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... 8&lang=eng
(near bottom, at the right, click on Download).

Alternatively, if you enter you laptop's TYPE number from the bottom, e.g. 2668-KHU, into the Quick path field, you can get all the drivers you may want for your laptop.

Thank you for your reply. I have loaded the correct drivers but still get the same message in Device Manager:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

In Network Connections there is only the LAN one there, there used to be the wireless one, also there are no network connections now in the task bar at the bottom right like there used to be.

Any ideas about what I could do next to get the wireless working?

Thanks!

Assuming the wifi worked before the crash, what program is now (trying to) control wifi access, is that Thinkvantage Access Connections or is it managed by Windows?

Uninstall Access Connections.
Then go into Device Manager and uninstall/delete any wifi drivers.
Shut down.
Reseat the wifi card, make sure it is in all the way, and that both antennas are connected.
Reboot.
"Found new hardware" should be able to auto-install the Intel drivers.

Hello,
I followed all the instructions but there is no Access Connections to uninstall, only the wired connection but nothing for wireless.

On my other PC it has a program for scanning for wireless networks there is nothing on the laptop now.............................

Do you have any other ideas I could try?

Thanks for your help so far.

Ignoring the Thinkpad Access software, it sounds like the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration service is not being started.

Click on the RUN button on the START MENU. Copy/paste this into the OPEN box:

%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s
click OK

Scroll down the list of Services to the Wireless Zero Configuration entry.

Check the SERVICE STATUS. If it is not started click START
Check that STARTUP TYPE is set to Automatic.

You may not have to, but I would reboot. Hopefully you will see the wireless icon in the System Tray.

Good luck,
John

Go into Device Manager and "remove" the hardware. Reboot the system and see if it fares any better.

It may be coincidence, but your card could have died at the same time of the HD crash.
Try and borrow another card from someone...
