X40 X41 CMOS Battery

#1 Post by tim S » Sat Jun 06, 2009 2:53 pm

My X41 keeps erratic time for some reason so I assume the CMOS battery needs replacement,
or at least I hope that's what it needs!
I can't seem to find a new battery for less than $27.00, and most are in the $50 to $60 range,
a really crazy price!
Does anyone here have experience with replacing the battery with a simple 3V lithium from a
drug store? Or will a battery from an older laptop do the job? They are available on eBay for only
a few dollars.
I know there are 3 wires coming out of the battery cover that go into a 3 hole plug that attaches
to the motherboard.

To answer to my own post, I sliced through the yellow heatshrink covering around the battery
and inside is a simple Maxel CR2025 3V battery. There are spot welded(?) + and - terminals
onto which the wires are soldered. There are three wires, red white and black; the white
and black are both soldered to the negative terminal while the red is soldered to the positive.
So my options are:
1. Get a 2-lead CR2025 3V Thinkpad battery from eBay and replace the wires with the X41
wires and connector, or
2. Get a battery from the drug store and lay the wires on the correct sides and cover with
a piece of duct tape.
I went with option 1. I found the correct battery on eBay for $2.45 shipped, I'll solder the X41
battery wires to the correct terminals and I'll be good to go.
