T60p Fuse F2 fixes no-AC power / no charging problem

#1 Post by rmkc23 » Sat Jun 06, 2009 8:12 pm

I have a T60p (1600 x 1200 15" LCD display and 41W1370 motherboard in a 2007CA2 model) that suddenly stopped charging. The "plug" icon would not light up, and I was surviving by swapping batteries that I alternately charged with another T60 I have.

It was unlikely the power adapter, as I have multiple and they all worked on other T60's. I did not suspect the power jack either, since the docks have their own jacks and they also didn't work.

My online search attempts returned information on a T4x series Thinkpads, and mentioned "F2" fuse, I decided to completely disassemble my T60p and see if I could find anything that looked like a fuse, and I found it, marked F2 and located close to the 5-pin plug from the power jack.

Since there was no marking on the fuse as there was on several other "Fx" marked items, I guessed at about 5 amps, and found an old glass fuse rated 5A at 32V, figuring the power brick 90W would be close to 20V x 5A = 100W.
I removed the F2, it measured no continuity whether in or out of circuit, then soldered in the strip of fuse material. There is black tape on top, so in the event it blows in the future it should be safe.

So the question for the forum is what is the exact size of this fuse, and where can I buy it.
Also, I can embed a photo of the external power F2 fuse location and the battery fuse (F11 - 10A) if someone can enlighten me as to how to do this on BBForum.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

As to the fuse, I'm guessing that it's probably one made by Littelfuse since T2x, A3x and T4x systems I've opened up have had something like this near the DC power jack:

(Look at the very top edge of the photo, about 1/3 of the way in from the left). This T23 motherboard has a fuse marked F2 that's located next to the plug coming from the power jack. I've found that both mouser.com and digikey.com sell these in single-unit quantities, albeit with a high shipping cost.

Another great resource for fuses is in this thread:

It's for a T4x system but download the fuse map and see if any of them look like your blown fuse.

edit: And to answer your question about posting images... You will need to find your own photo-hosting site and then link to them. Thinkpads.com does not support members uploading images to this server. We prefer that you embed a link to the photos but will permit an inline photo as long as it is <50KB and a warning is placed in the original post's subject line (e.g., *PIC*) so that people using dial-up or smartphones can decide for themselves if it's worth reading the thread.
