x61s with external 1920x1600
hey I'm having problems getting an x61s (as well as an R61) working with an external 1920x1200 monitor.
Everything says in "theory" it should support 2048x1536 or something like that and I've seen posts by other people saying that 1920x1200 work for them but no one really said what they had to do to get it working.
My external monitor is a samsung T260HD which does 1920x1200, both my x61s and r61 use the intel x3100. Both work at 1680x1050. When I do 1920x1200 they both display partially on the screen. It's like the sceen image is shifted vertically by half the screen so the top of the screen shows the bottom half of the desktop, and the bottom half of the screen is just blank.
I get this using vista on the R61 and Fedora 10 on the x61s.
Does anyone else have any clue as to what is going on here?
has anyone else actually gotten a X3100 doing external display to 1920x1200? what did you have to do to get it working?

Interestingly, I just tried connecting an external 1920x1200 monitor to my X61 T (not S, but same Intel X3100 graphics) for the first time this evening. It worked right off the bat and even identified the monitor it was connected to by name. I just clicked on extended display and the dialog box even recommended the 1920x1200 resolution setting for the external monitor (I presume because it knew which monitor was connected and its capabilities from communicating with it on the VGA connector's I2C bus).
This may be a function of the display driver. I'm using Windows 7 RC1 and the driver is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - Prerelease WDDM 1.1) version 8.15.10.1749. But the hardware definitely works.
I do remember having a lot of trouble getting a 1920x1200 monitor working with Kubuntu on another PC a couple of years ago. Today the xorg drivers support it natively.

Re: x61s with external 1920x1600
what you describe sounds like a sync problem, thus the monitor missreads the pulse telling him that a new frame is ariving. ( I gather almost the whole image is desplyed, just not at the right place of the screen)
After all VGA port is an analog connector.
Try:
- downloading a driver for the monitor
- playing with the frame rates settings on both the notebooks and the screen
- check the screen manual if it is accepting 1920x1600 via analog (VGA)
- if you can: try a different cable (and try the laptops on other screens or other computers on this screen.)
good luck

I use a Dell 1920x1200 monitor with my x61s all the time.

Just tested my x61s connected to a 40" Samsung LED tv, even with Windows 7 everything worked OOB displaying 1920 x 1200

Re: x61s with external 1920x1600
thanks for all the replies. Eventually I found it...
After plugging it in and getting it to display - albiet funny, I have to go to the tv's "tools" -> "auto adjust" and then it all works fine.
For some reason the auto-detect that's suppose to happen when you select source doesn't do everything it needs to.
cool, now I have an excessively large 26" display hooked up to my ultra tiny 12" x61s
