Clean install of Windows 7 RC on x200
Clean install of Windows 7 RC on x200
I just got a new x200 with Vista Home and would like to do a clean install of Windows 7 RC. Looking for some tips before doing so. What's the best way to go about doing this? Should I format the HD and then boot from the Windows 7 DVD? Is it OK to just extract the ISO and do a clean install from within Vista, or will that method only allow me to upgrade? If I do a clean install, should I be concerned about the x200 drivers? What about any of the stock lenovo software that comes with it? Can these be downloaded from lenovo?
Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Mod edit - I got rid of your duplicate thread. We do not allow that here. Also, I am moving this to the Beta forum....Harryc

I do not understand the intention of your questions.
There really isn't anything difficult about installing Win7. But alright, the answers to your questions would be:
- I would recommend extracting the files contained in the ISO image and simply copy them to a fairly fast USB drive. Then boot from that device and install Win7 that way. In my opinion, this is the fastest and most comfortable way - plus you save a blank dvd
.
- You won't have to install a lot of drivers after having installed Win7, iirc the only devices i had to install drivers for were the FP reader and the UMTS device.
- Lenovo offers some of the important software tools for Win7 (findable e.g. here http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/mess ... &jump=true), although it seems that some of them still don't work satisfactorily, according to what I read in the German board thinkpad-forum.de.

Re: Clean install of Windows 7 RC on x200
Amue's advice is spot on. But you can also burn the iso to rewritable DVD drive although a USB flash drive will result in a faster install.
But W7 itself just installs practically everything and your machine should be running pretty well right away even if you don't install anything further. For example, W7 should install the proper display driver and you will be able to get online right away after the install finishes.
But after the intial install just install those Lenovo W7 beta drivers that you want, especially the Hot Key driver, power management driver, power manager, the ultra nav stuff, the card reader driver and you are pretty much set.
When you start installing programs, most will just install normally, however, W7's compatibility function will offer to reinstall a program in the proper compatibility mode if it feels that that is needed. So sometimes you have to install a program twice.
It's a really slick OS. You will probably have a lot of fun with it. I sure am.

Re: Clean install of Windows 7 RC on x200
i just downloaded the win7 RC 64 bit and when burning the ISO image in Nero Burning ROM, it's telling me the block size is not correct and ask if i wish to correct it. i never encountered that before in burning ISO files, this is the first. any suggestions?pae77 wrote:Amue's advice is spot on. The file may be corrupted, you can try downloading it again.

Make sure you make the recovery discs and a copy of the SWTools folder before you install anything.

or could it be because i was trying to burn the image file on a xp system, so it doesn't support the x64?amue wrote:The file may be corrupted, you can try downloading it again.
