T43 type 1872 Operating System not Found

Hi everyone,

First I do have to express admiration for all the solutions found in this website. At least I found answers to 3 of my so called "condemned" T4x's in my pile of IBM's(GPU problems). Unfortunately being in the wrong continent, its not economical enough to send them to get someone do it. May just have to DIY them.

Anyway my main point, I have this peculiar T43 type 1872. It has problems during rebooting. Sometimes after a reboot it will display Operating System not found message. Previously it used a non compliant HDD which resulted in the famous caution warning during bootup now I replaced it with a compliant 40GB 5400 IBM Hitachi HDD but it is still showing the same error just without the startup warning.

Any ideas or suggestions on this?

The first thing I would try (assuming you have ensured the drive is good) is to reseat the drive in the bay carefully. I have found that at times, the drive can be inserted and it seems like it's in properly, when in fact, it is not and not all pins are making proper contact. Before inserting, make sure all the pins are exactly straight. If one is off, that's an indicator of a problem. You can carefully straighten it with needle nose pliers or fine tweezers.

Sounds like a loose Southbridge chip... Try reflowing if you want to DIY.
