I thought of that, of course, it generaly requires a bootable CD ROM which these laptops don't have as far as I can tell....

A full install of linux OS?
I am considering and will, however I'd love to know that it will work for sure before I wipe the current win 2000 OS.

Plus, I wasn't sure if I could find an old Linux OS that would run well on a system with these specs. I have some experience with linux installs (distrowatch, etc), but, it's limited.

No. The green light does not mean cardbus is enabled. That only means that your PCMCIA slots are enabled.
You have click on PC Card Slots and enable cardbus.

I hope we're talking about the same thing altogether.
This is IBM think pad configuration utility 1.19d

When I click on PC Card Slots button, I don't get an option to enable cardbus.

It's the window that displays hardware devices with a title "unplug or eject hardware" (with no devices listed of course). Check boxes for display device compoonents and show unplug/eject icon on the taksbard. I must be missing something.

Yes, it is ThinkPad Configuration Version 1.19, Utility version 1.19d.

When I click the little PC Card Slots icon with the green light next to it up comes a popup window that says PC Card slots at the top. There is a General tab and an Allocated Resources tab. On the General tab there is an option to Enable or Disable Cardbus and a setting for the IRQ you wish to use. Below that is a button that says "PC Card Properties" and another button that says "Device Manager".

My 760EL & 760XD both have this.

Well, I finally got it to work - and finally saw the PC Card options as you've described. What did it take?

I reinstalled Win98SE with this technique:
1.) First I downloaded all available drivers and instructions from here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-59734

2.) flashed the BIOS as instructed by IBM.

3.) Then I installed Win98 SE as desbribed here:
http://stderr.org/pipermail/thinkpad/20 ... 11543.html

4.) I then applied the unofficial win98 service pack from here:
http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

5.) Installed the PCMCIA card driver (I was / am using a 32bit wireless card - Netgear WG511) - the card was recognized but wouldn't work (yet) - no IRQ assigned. When I looked at it under device manager, yellow exclamation with no IRQ - it allowed me to enable IRQ steering and reboot but nothing would happen.

6.) Updated video driver

7.) Installed thinkpad utilities - low and behold NOW I could see the options everyone has mentioned before. I clicked PC Card, enabled cardbus and rebooted and HOLY S***, it worked!! Card was recognized, I joined my wireless network and I was off and running.

The only thing I haven't done is installed the audio/modem driver package (MWave) - I don't need either one and am nervous if I install them something will get screwed up and I'll have to start over. It's pretty cool - I am using remote desktop to remote into my xp pro machine and control it from this great old laptop!

I'm quite happy - I hope this works from all other's that have had issues.

It's weird that not all users seem to have had to do thing =/
Anyway, nice post :p
I may find it useful when I try to get my Cardbus working myself XD

I did install the mwave drivers and modem driver without issue. I'm not going to say the device manager is entirely free of errors, but nothing to worry about

Does the 760ED have a modem?
I notice on the side there is a icon of a phone and beside it there is what looks like a removable flap... yet it doesn't seem to be removable.

Is this where the modem would go if there was one? Or am I just too stupid to pull the socket cover off of it. :?

Yes, that's where the modem would go if you had one. If the cover is there then you don't have the modem.

Under the keyboard I noticed a switch just above the floppy/CD - apparently it has to do with the modem - but mine won't move. I don't want to force it.

Any input on that?

On the page for the SVGA Bios update it tells me that for my Laptop I must use the:

"IBM ThinkPad 760E-760ED XGA System Program Service Diskette"

Now, Where exactly do I get this from?

A quick search of various keywords and that sentence seemed to be fairly fruitless, at most taking me back to the SVGA update page.
Any help?
Thanks in advance :)

I think I'm reading your question correctly.
The BIOS update for XGA can be downloaded from here under BIOS:

Hi, all I come back after being away for a while and sad to see that the Cardbus issue has not been solved:(

I removed my Win2000 and installed ME instead on my 20GB hdd(working if you install Ontracks diskmanager). ME is not that good to handle memory and freezes up several time, but there is some hacks on the net to get it to work.

Still I wish that I could get Win2000 to work:)

Now I'm looking to buy another IBM laptop, since the 760XL only have 1Mb Video RAM and i want to use a laptop for video as well:) But I will keep my old 760XL and still mess around with it:)

If I ever should find a solution for this probleme then it will be posted here:)

With regards

By the way i just took apart my battery and it seems that it is possible to change the cells yourself:) You just have to find the cells on the net:)

The 770 series is selling cheap on evilbay now, some have 4mb video, all have built in USB and most 13.3 or 14.1 inch lcds. They use yet another style hard drive caddy with the connector on the side. They also have the largest ultrabay which can take a 2nd regular 770 battery, there is an adapter piece to help hold it in.
Down side is its a heavy (7+lbs) machine. Many came with DVD hardware.

Anyone know what kind of RAM it takes there is alot on the market for different prices:) I was thinking that if it can take pc100 that would be nice:) I have my eye on some :

KTM-TP770/128
KVR100X64SC2L/128
KVR100X64SC3/128
KVR66X64SO/128

The cheapest one of course:)

I bought the laptop, Thinkpad 770Z and it has build in 64MB and can be upgraded to max. 320MB.

The Cpu is a PII 366Mhz which for what I can tell is running 66Mhz on the motherboard. And it has USB:):):)

So now I'm shopping for a USB netcard and Bluetooth adapter for 100m:) I want to see if I can set up internet connection sharing by Bluetooth:)
Next thing I will buy is a USB or PCcard TV tuner for it:)

Hi All, I'm back with new info that began as I had problems getting my TP 760 XL to work with 2000/XP and ended up with me buying another laptop:) I bought a TP 770z and that I have not regreted, its a wonderfull laptop and now I have set i t up with Bluetooth internet sharing and that works just fine:) I added extra 128MB memory, so total is now 192MB, and now XP pro is running just fine.

Video is great and with the USB 2.0 pccard I can use an external CD-RW/DVD drive just fine, but I would not recommend anyone to add an internal DVD drive because the internal controller is not fast enough. Neither is LPT or PCMCIA controllers, it will work but sound will be distorted. Just a warning.
If you want to use CD-RW or DVD or a combo drive then use a USB 2.0 drive.

The laptop burns cd's just fine but I would not try with a DVD burner, for that the laptop is not fast enough.

If you have a drive already but its not USB then you can buy an enclosure (casing) like I did and add the drive in this. I bought a Delock but there are others on the net. The Delock though has something really great, it comes with an USB and ps/2 power cable so if you are on the move you can use drive just fine, no need to use the power adapter. The power adapter is included in the pakage just in case you want to use it.

Make sure that the casing has a USB 2.0 controller and make sure it fits the controller in the case, most drives has a standard connector in the right side of the drive when looking at the back, but not all.
Here is a picture of the standard connector: http://www.logicsupply.com/images/cddvd ... y_pic2.jpg

If anyone has questions or problems regarding this laptop feel free to contact me or just leave a message in this forum, I'm monitoring this thread.

With kind regards

I have a question for the people who have correctly installed windows2k or windowsXP on the TP 760 series.

Where do you find the driver for Audio and Video Devices? I've installed win2k on my TP 760XD but the only device that don't work correctly is Audio And Video (in the "device manager" window)

thx

Well do you have the configuration utility loaded? If not then get it here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-3XZMX3

and this small fix for it:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4HT3RF

Remember that XL and XD is not that different! Most of the time you can use the same drivers.

Here is a small fix if you want to run WinME instead, after this its not so much a memory hog. http://www.mdgx.com/me2.htm

Here you should be able to find alot of info on you laptop:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... idate=true

Here is another important thing you should read:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4FUQKX

Get Astra32 and find out what kind of video card you have down to the excact chip, then write it here and I shall try to help you find a driver if it exist. Do the same with the Audio.
