[R50e] Questions about memory and CPU upgrades?

#1 Post by sambaMW » Sun Jun 14, 2009 3:00 am

Hi,
I am thinking to upgrade my R50e if it is possible and makes sense.
I already have 2GB memory which is the maximum according to official specs. However in the Thinkwiki there is a section about successful upgrades beyond specs for other thinkpads -> http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Unofficia ... mory_specs. So I was hoping there is the possibility for the R50e too. Does anyone have the experience with the R50e or know how likely it will be?
The other thing is the cpu-upgrade. I am a little uncertain if this makes sense. I already have an Pentium M Dohan which was the maximum for R50e according to Thinkwiki. As I am not familiar with cpu-upgrades I do not know what the maximum cpu-upgrade which would be possible would be and what the cpu would cost. How much speed could I gain? Also: I am not familiar with the procedure of exchanging the cpu. Are there instructions for the R50e? Can be just taken out and be replaced without soldering? Are there apart from the possibility of doing it wrong any chances of negative side effects since the board was not build for it? Do I have to replace other parts like the fan or so?

Thanks for yours advice :-)

I am not familiar of any modules over 1GB existing for DDR RAM, so 2GB (seeing as there are 2 slots) indeed seems as the maximum.

As for CPU, you can put any of the 400MHz bus Dothans, with 2GHz (Pentium M 755) and 2.1GHz (Pentium M 765) being the top-end.
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

With respect to the removal of the CPU, it is fairly straight forward. Removal of the keyboard and palmrest are necessary, then the fan of course. The CPU is a Zero Force socket, with a lock mechanism. Turn the flathead screw on the lock mechanism and the CPU just lifts out.The 2.0 and 2.1 CPUs are powerful, but generate a ton of heat compared to what your R50 came equipped with, most likely. Upgrading the fan would be advisable. At the absolute least, you should reapply thermal grease if you change CPUs
Cell phones are my specialty. Got questions? Ask away.

That is good to know. What kind of fan would I need? Will my TP will be still so silent as before?
