I have successfully installed OS X 10.5.6 on my T40 using the iPC 10.5.6. Currently, the os is in a usable state.
My T40 (this thing is from 2003):
1.6GHz Intel Pentium M
768MB
35GB Partioned for OSX
14.1" screen (1400x1050)
Dual Band Wifi Wireless Mini PCI (Atheros AR5211 -- PCI168C, 12)
Bluetooth
Working after install with no tweaking:
-ethernet
-USB
-bluetooth
-audio
-DVD
Not working:
-wireless
-sleep
-battery meter
-CI/QE
Side note items:
-changed resolution to 1400x1050
-trackpoint and left/right buttons work, middle button does not
-trackpad and left/right buttons work concurrently by default
-trackpad clicking is an option that works, but sometimes randomly disables the trackpoint when switched
-Fn+F5 turns on/off bluetooth
-Fn+Home, Fn+End increases/decreases brightness, Fn+PgUp turns on/off keyboard light
-volume buttons work to increase/decrease/mute volume, when power button pressed a pop up asks you if you want to shut down, sleep, or restart
-access IBM button does nothing
-Alt key registers as command key, but no option key T_T
-the backpage/forward page keys above the cursor keys do nothing
==============================
I've been trying to get the wireless to work but no luck. Tried modifying the AirportAtheros5424.kext's info.plist by adding <string>pci168c,12</string> and rebooting with "-f". No success there. My system network currently only recognizes the ethernet (en0) and bluetooth.
Only other problem is that it takes 5-6 minutes to boot. The hang is due to the interface namer. But I have yet to tackle that and I don't see it as a threat.
My focus right now is getting wireless to work.
Any suggestions or potentially successful methods??!
Help greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Re: 10.5.6 on T40 (wifi not working)
I just finished installed 10.5.6 onto a dell mini9 and all features work including sleep..
I also ran into wifi not working correctly on the dell and it turned out that (at least on the mini 9) that the wireless card was "turned off" even if it was enabled in bios. I had to create a linux live thumb drive and turn on the card, once I did this, wireless came up with no problems. I found this from the mydellmini forums while searching for "airport off". Before I found this, I had reinstalled OSX at least 15x and did the -x and -f boots too many times to count.
I may try this on my T42 to see if this works..
