newbie needs some pointers

#1 Post by eosme » Tue Jun 16, 2009 12:06 am

just got my x200 today and very stoked. bought mine at tigerdirect.

got a couple of questions:
1) it shows that it has a media reader on the x200 in the specs. i can't find it. maybe they put the wrong spec on the sitehttp://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... srkey=x200?

2) how can i tell if my model has integrated WWAN? i see in the x200 datasheet that models with wwan supports GPS?

3) how about WiMAX?

4) Where do i enable bluetooth?

5) Thinkadvantage to backup and create a recovery disk. But I have the HDD version, would i still use this to create a image backup of the OS to a disc drive or USB drive? (or any other suggestions on creating a recovery disk backup?)

Thanks in advance.

It's on the front.

I believe they're all WWAN ready. You'd just need a SIM card. I'm not super up on this. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

The Intel 5350 is the WiMax card. Look in device manager.

Fn+F5 turns on/off the wireless and bluetooth radios. The page on TD, doesn't mention bluetooth. It's show up in device manager too if you've got it.

I don't know if you can make images of the recovery discs. I've never had an X series ThinkPad. If you can borrow an external, it might not be a bad idea. You don't want to have the images on the drive if something happens to it. Drives are pretty cheap on NewEgg.

Congrats on the machine.

hi fred.. thanks! i'm now feeling like a homer simpson for the SD slot. it's all black and hard to see... i should have checked. i'll check about the WiMax and the WWan. i'd love to have that gps function.

i'm going to see if i can borrow an optical drive from work and burn the image of recovery disk.

btw.. i don't see a Intel 5350 (the WiMax card) listed. i only see a intel wifi link 5300AGN. does that mean mine is not WiMAX?

also, i noticed there's an express card slot on the left. can i get a express card SSD and install it in as another drive? any particular type you would recommend?

Yes, the 5300 is not the WiMax card. I wouldn't worry about WiMax in the near future. It's not available in too many spots right now.

Yes, you can get a SSD ExpressCard. I haven't used them myself, so no help there.

thanks fred. i noticed in the express connectivity program WWAN is not highlighted. question is, would that only light up if i'm in a city that has public WWAN?

What's the machine type/model from the sticker on the bottom of the machine? If it's a CTO model, look up the original shipped parts here;

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... -WARNTY#sw

Do a warranty lookup, then once that page is displayed click on the button for shipped parts list. Post it here if you need help.

If it really is a 7459-N15 as listed at Tiger Direct, then it is WAN upgradeable, which means that you'd have to purchase a card.

Original description: Based on 7459-5FU: P8400(2.26GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 12.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel X4500HD, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN upgradeable, Bluetooth, Modem, 1GB Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32

thank you Harry. I'll check on the bottom of the computer to see what it shows. if it's WAN upgradeable, what kind of card would i need? or simply put, is WAN worthwhile to upgrade to? i live in fremont and san jose, and i know both cities don't have WAN. probably only Mt. View has WAN.

I think you are confusing WAN with Wimax. WAN is cellular technology. If you have cell towers in the area, and your service provider provides service to the area, then all you do is sign up. The card is in the parts manual. I can look it up later.

hi harry.. thanks for the link on verifying which model i have. cuz i just found out my version of the x200 has extended warranty till 2012.

not sure if it's the same for all X200 users.. but i was stoked to read this:

Description:
This product has a special bid three year limited warranty. This product is entitled to parts, labor and on-site repair service (9x5 next business day) in approved locations. Thinkpad batteries have a one year warranty.

A three year warranty only applies if it was purchased at the time of order (or before the end of the first year). The default is a one year warranty. If your machine has a three year warranty and you were not aware of it, then that is good news.

Well, if you looked up the machine type/serial at the Lenovo warranty page and it said it has a three year warranty, then that's what it has. No need to extend anything.
