WTB: IBM branded dual core laptop

#1 Post by thinkpadinside » Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:57 pm

Hi guys. I am starting up my own OSx86 development project, and I am leading it across multiple thinkpads (Namely t40, x41 tablet, t30, and maybe one more) Im looking for an IBM branded dual core laptop (Must say IBM Thinkpad on the palmrest and lid, not just thinkpad), probably around t60 series. Must be dual core (meaning core duo/pentium dual core or better). As for the graphics card, ati x1300 or x1400 preferred, gma 950 is ok, absolutly NO FIREGL graphics cards. I cannot make those work! I don't need RAM, or a big hard drive. NO INTEL WIFI! I can not stress this enough, it cannot have an intel wifi chip (2100,2200,2965,3965, or 4965). Broadcom or atheros preferred, or just on wifi chip at all. Just needs to be functional. Remember, this is a project laptop to be testing and developing an operating system on. Please throw em as cheap as you can. Donations welcomed :D

Things i have for trade:
IBM ac adapter (the old 3 pronged one, and the newer 2 pronged ones)
IBM 600e
IBM T30 (the things been through hell and back, ask ajkula66, he knows ;) )
Brand new in box Sandisk Video HD 8gb memory stick pro duo (retails 90$!)
Brand new in box Sandisc 8gb Flash drive
Sandisk 4gb Memory stick pro duo
Xbox 360 webcam

Thanks for looking!

Just curious as to the significance of this. You can buy stickers on eBay. R60 night be worth a look. If you can find one to your liking it'll probably be cheaper than a T60 similarly configured. Don't have a notebook to sell you, but good luck in the quest.

You should also look into Z61 series, which is probably the most underrated generation of ThinkPads ever...

Hmm never heard of that series before. Short lived i assume? I'd also like it from somebody in the forums who knows about these machines, rather than ebay.

The R is probably cheaper than the Z. The Z was supposed to be the widescreen ThinkPad until they made the T series widescreen, at which point it sort became redundant. The Z had some nice features. The 14" Z is lighter than the T series and the 15.4" Z was built like a tank, thought a bit on the heavy side.

I just picked up a Z61T for this same kind of project. They're about the smallest "modern" machine you'll be able to get that "should" hackintosh pretty easily.

I think it'll be tough to get a non-Intel Wi-Fi card, but you can get an Atheros pretty easily aftermarket (I'm stealing the one from my T60). A Z61T is pretty similar to a T60, and I got iPC 10.5.6 to install pretty easily on my T60 in a test run (w/ GMA 950). I'd suggest GMA950, since it's probably less troublesome than the (older, mobile) ATI chipsets have been.

I'm also going to try an X61 tablet out, too, but they're not in the cheap category yet...

PS: What's the project? Curious...

Good Luck!

im kinda low on money, but i do have some spare parts. Im developing my own osx86 distro, and perfecting all parts to it. I'm not going to use a pre-built distro like ipc, i think if i do it myself i can make a better hackintosh. ATi is a pain to deal with, but it performs way better than gma 950, and im willing to hack away ;) . However, i did perfect my X41 tablet, as it has all tablet features and it runs pretty well. X60 should not be a problem ;) Im more leaning now towards a z61 series, since its widescreen. The rest of my previous posts apply. If need be, i will buy the barebones laptop to save money.

small bump. price range is capped at 400$ if that makes things easier. Really would like a T60 wide screen with ati graphics, or z61m with ati graphics.

ahhh, I might have the solution for you... t60 with everything you want... however, the specs are a bit higher.
dual core (gotta go home and check which one)
2 gb of ram or I can stick the stock 1gb back into it.
320gb hd (i rather keep this for my next laptop as I barely put it in 2 weeks ago and you dont even need a big hd anyhoo)
intel wifi card
x1300 graphics
1400x1050 reso.

Let me know if you're interested. It works and runs like a champ, unfortunately, the only game I really play is Dota on warcraft 3- and for some reason, WC3 doesn't like the x1300 or its drivers. It'll even run fine on my x31- and the fact that I want a desktop replacement, I'm hoping to get high res screen; 1920x1200. email me if you're interested: azneinstein[at]gmail.com

I have one that can meet your requirement with a twist.

Thinkpad T60 2623-d6u. I think it is "IBM" labelled but I can check to be sure. It has the Intel Wifi but you can replace or remove it if you want. ThinkLight on top is broken and does not work. Otherwise the machine functions. RAM has been upgraded to 1.5GB and the rest are stock.

I am asking $380 shipped within the CONUS. Let me know if you are interested and/or need more details.
