ebay paypal checkout VS paypal only for worldwide shipping

#1 Post by irus » Thu Jun 18, 2009 1:01 am

hi guys
this is regarding shipping of a t42 mobo. the seller on ebay wants to transact via paypal outside of ebay. he is in us and his item description shows it ships to us alone. so for international shipping he wants paypal outside ebay.

is this an ok way of transacting? or should i insist he update the shipping options from united states to worldwide on his item description? does this have any impact incase a dispute comes up? how easy is it for him to update the shipping options?

any inferences or tips from this behaviour or is it clean?

thanks!

If you go outside of eBay on an eBay transaction, you will have no protection from eBay at all.
You will also have to rely on the honesty of the seller, as he goes against eBay rules.
PayPal alone gives you no protection, and there is no room for dispute in any way.
Only possibility would be, if seller sends you rubbish (or nothing at all), is to go to your bank/credit card company and demand a refund (if they offer that).
I would say: pass on this deal.

Can you please clarify: do you mean that when you buy from a private person, not through eBay or any website, and pay them via Paypal, you have no protection at all against fraud? At least not from Paypal?

PayPal will try to recover the funds, but if the seller has shut down his/hers bank account, they'll just say ooops we're sorry but you're SOL...

That's why one should always use only CC-backed PayPal.

Been there, done that, cost me $325 to learn a couple of years ago...

i've requested the seller to create a new listing with worldwide shipping as ebay wouldnt let him update US shipping to worldwide on the current listing! thankfully he is friendly and patient! :D

The buyer should have a PayPal account, that is funded with a Credit Card, rather than a bank account.
If anything goes wrong, the CC company can recall a payment, the bank can not.

Forget about asking PayPal to do anything.

Pay with a CC-backed PayPal and you're good to go...if something goes wrong just initiate the chargeback with your CC company...

Don't forget that the seller is taking a considerable risk by accepting to ship the item to you in the first place, and accept PayPal from your location...and is relying entirely on your honesty...he/she's got way more to lose than you...

wherever there is exchange risk will be there. international trade more so, so be it. thanks for unravelling some of the new risks involved here. :)

I don't think that's necessary. Just ask him to add you to his buyer requirements exemption list and you'll be able to bid on the US-only listing.

ya thats a good tip and the other way which i followed was to bid in the auction sale (no buyer requirements here) and when u win the bid manually enter the shipping amount while checking out, ofcourse after confirming with the seller.

thanks for the tips guys the transaction is done. hopefully no disputes will come from it! :)

Much easier: after you have won, ask seller to send you an invoice with the exact total on it.
It's a function on the Auction page, where it says Pay Now (or ask for an invoice or something).

thats probably the most secure and correct step-wise way to transact
