R60e HDD upgrade

#1 Post by BruceA » Thu Jun 18, 2009 1:17 pm

Hi, I have a late 2006 IBM/Lenovo Lenovo Thinkpad R60e 0657 model A9G still with it's original 2.5" 60GB SATA drive. (A Lenovo /fujitsu
MHV2060 BH PL)
I am looking to increase the main HDD capacity and from various postings etc I understand there is/was a problem with firmware and bios warnings when non IBM/Lenovo sourced drives were used for such an HDD upgrade one some models. Certainly I remember having to do a firmware update on the current (OEM) drive using a Lenovo sourced iso image.

Can anyone advise if mine is such a model, if the issue is still current and/or how to choose a compatible drive or work around this (apart from paying Lenovo double the retail price).

I am happy with the process of imaging the disk to USB drive under linux, swapping the HDD for a new one and restore the image back again under Linux - it's just the firmware issue I cannot get a clear answer on and I'd like a few success stories before ordering a 'normal' drive.

Lots of people have surely tried this by now though ??

thanks for any help

Should be just a straight swap. I have a R60e 0657, and replaced the original 60gb with a Hitachi 100gb no problem.

The firmware issue was related to the T43 generation of ThinkPads. Your R60 shouldn't be effected.
