gmail.google.com

It's google's free email service (currently in beta testing). Google computers scan through emails and create some unobtrusive targeted advertising based on keywords in the emails. That's how Google makes $ from the free email service.

Gmail has a host of excellent features, including easy searching, labels, and conversation threading.

Getting spammed with emails is the reason I quit my last ISP. I couldn't stand that. I was having to use Spam filtering as well as special software, but still got an overwhelming number of unwanted emails. If I took the filters off and uninstalled the Anti-Spam software, the number of emails I got easily approached 1000 a day. Now, with FireFox and a new email address I get only a handful of emails a day. For me, I'd avoid Google's email altogether, if they create unwanted email adverts.

Actually, I don't think Google has been giving out emails to advertising companies...I have not gotten more than about 5 spam emails over the past 6 months I've had the account...and I've signed up for a lot of stuff with it so it could be anything.
