found a bit but not sure what the more expensive Part No. would cover if this cheaper part covers seemingly everything?

Protection Service
Lenovo's Protection Service offers a performance-related insurance to enterprise and individual users' notebooks, arising out of accidental drop or an inadvertent liquid spill. Unlike traditional insurance companies, which cover for damage/loss from extraneous factors, the company claims that this Protection Service is specifically geared towards issues arising out of normal operating conditions and equips the customers' notebooks to be repaired or replaced immediately to ensure minimal downtime.

The protection cover can be availed of for a period of 1 to 3 years and covers all kinds of repairs and replacements arising out of operational or structural failures under normal operating conditions or handling, inadvertent liquid spills, unintentional drops and bumps, electrical surge and LCD screen failure. The service however does not cover theft or loss, cosmetic damage that does not affect the performance of the machine and damage due to fire and intentional acts.

The protection service can be availed of, for Rs. 2,052/- for a year.

Thinkpad Protection, just like the regular warranty can only be purchased while the laptop is in warranty, and to a maximum of 3/5 years (depending on region).

Post-warranty service is for laptops that went out of warranty. That's why it's more expensive. Probably doesn't even cover accidental damage.

the t42 which i have came with a 3 year onsite IWS which got over on 1/7/2008. if i buy a post warranty service pac for 1 year onsite will it be worthwhile or useless! after the mobo switch?

the warranty agreement says ibm will replace nonfunctional parts with old parts even when machine is under original warranty (if new are not available).

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/supp ... 753-08.pdf (Under Exchange of Machine or Part heading)

better buy parts from ebay whenever something goes wrong i guess. much cheaper that way.

The Thinkpad protection is expensive, but depending on how you use the machine, it can be a great thing. I just sent in a T61 for service that looked like it had been dropped from a second-floor window. (I bought it busted, I didn't cause the damage.) They replaced the LCD, the LCD cover, lcd bezel, the base, motherboard, keyboard, magnesium frame, palmrest, DVDRW and HDD.

very neat! practically you've got a new laptop! how much does warranty increase the resale value of the comp? a t42 + 1 yr onsite for $188.. does the laptop command an extra 188 when its sold?

There's no fixed value guidelines when it comes to used laptops. It's all about what the seller asks for and what the buyer agrees to. But I seriously doubt that anyone will pay you an extra $188, on a laptop that goes for $250 more or less, just because it has $188 worth of warranty. Because fo this extra $188, for instance, one can probably find a T60 that is newer, faster, and has the same warranty remaining.

that makes sense! especially when for the warranty price a new laptop (t42) could be had whenever the need arises!
