T43 Hard Drive Done... Suggestions

#1 Post by kanderna » Fri Jun 19, 2009 2:04 pm

Hey all -

My HDD on my T43 (2687) went last night (loud clicking noises and "No Operating System Found").

One question...
- Do I have any options for data recovery? Guessing I'm SOL on that one.

Thanks.

Almost impossible to find new drives that don't give the 2010 error but just before I saw your post I noticed one on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-Fujitsu-1 ... 7C294%3A50

Not cheap but then I've seen a new 120gb version go for over $120 recently. If you could live with a used drive, search ebay for a MHV2120AH - the 120gb version. These Fujitsu drives wiil not give the 2010 error message, I have several stashed.

If you dont mind two beeps and about 3 or 4 sec's longer to boot up windows, you can just use any IDE drive.
I too was looking for a drive for my T43P.Thanks to John (91011) and the PM with the list of drives that dont give the 2010 error.I went looking on e-bay and like he said, they dont come cheap.
In the end i went to the computer store here in town and they had some new Samsung 160 gig 5400 drives there for $80.00 CDN.Can get then little cheaper online.
I think it's a good trade off.I have a new ,full 3 year warranty, Samsung 160gig that gives the 2010 error but it's almost half the price of a 120gig drive that dont give the error.
The 160gig is a fast drive also.I have it running with Win 7 RC.Even have the ThinkVantage Active Protection System running great.

Thanks for the suggestion on a drive. I did find the older Fujita 120gb that supposedly works online for around $70, but not sure on the rep of the retailer. Seems to be listed on most "compare price" sites.

I will say that cost really isn't an issue because I'm covered by an extended warranty via my AMEX. They want me to ship it back to IBM, but I know if I do that I'll be stuck with the same 80gb. So I'll need to try to talk them out of that.

How about data? Definitely gone and no reason to even try?

I don't know the quality of these people, but they are quite reasonable in their price, $129.- for recovery:

Anybody here who used them?

HDD is a FRU. So go ahead and take the warranty replacement. No need to send your T43 in normally.

I and some members had successfully used a program called FindPart written by an expert named Sven Olaf Mikkelsen. Help is free but quicker if you use his paypal account.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum wondering if someone could help me out. I just bought a used T43, 15" screen, I'm loving it. Works great except the battery is a little short. I'm planning to upgrade the HD, so a. I have a backup of the OS and programs, and b) i have more space for stuff. I want to get something that doesn't have the 2010 error everyone is talking about. Found this on Ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2759.l1259
Listing says that it's compatible with T43, I asked the guy and he said it wouldn't give the error. Seems like too good a price for a 160gb drive that won't get 2010 on the T43. Anyone have anyexperience with this drive or vendor?

You WILL get the error from that drive. Period.

I don't know if you will find this helpful, but I recently replaced my old TP hard drive with the Toshiba MK4026GAX RoHS. At least that's what it says in Device Manager. All is well. No problems to report. No beeping or other anamolies. So far, so good.

You should avoid Toshiba drives at all cost! They are highly UNreliable.
Go for Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital or Samsung instead (and in that order).

Quick update -

Just sent it in considering it was being paid for. Took them a while, one week (In the past if I shipped it on Wed I'd have it back on Fri). It was in "Hold for customer information" for a couple days. When I called they said they didn't need anything from me and when he read the notes it sounded like they had problems when they installed the new drive.

Much to my surprise, they ended up installing a 100gb drive! It was listed on the parts list, and when I checked... sure enough! It's the Hitachi HTS721010G9AT.

Now begins the process of updating, recovering, etc, etc.

Thanks for the help!
