Thinkpad T61p died :s

#1 Post by Vurso » Mon Jun 22, 2009 5:18 am

Hi,

I encountered the dread blank screen and 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps a couple of days ago.

Everything was working fine, shutdown the laptop and left it charging overnight, powered it up in the morning and nothing, just a blank screen (fan spins initially and then stops).

The spec is:

T61p 15.4"
T7800 CPU, 4GB Memory, 200GB SATA 7800 rpm CPU

I have had the laptop from new for just under a year and it has run flawlessly however I had suspected the GPU was on it's way out due to 3D games etc becoming choppy and the system in general becoming extremely hot.

I used the TPFancontrol software which kept the system healthy for a while however as above didn't stop the system from completely dying.

I am gutted as all my work is on the HDD and I don't want to use another laptop as the T61p was great :(

So I have accepted the fact that I need to get a new system board but does anyone know where the hell I get one in the UK?

As my laptop was purchased in the US originally Lenovo are just being plain difficult to deal with at the moment and keep redirecting me to a website page that doesn't work (supposidly a parts list) - why can't they tell me what part I need, why should I tell them what part I need?!

Anyone know where in the UK I can source a replacement board for my Thinkpad T61p?

Thanks in advance,

V

If you put in the four characters of your laptop TYPE (e.g. 2008) and the Serial No (e.g. 99-AB12V) here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... yle=lenovo
you get a list of the original parts ex factory.
Look for PLANAR (which is IBM-speak for Motherboard).
Having the P/N makes it easier to hunt for it.
You can look on eBay or put a WTB (want to buy) ad in out market forum.
Both probably much cheaper than from an official dealer.

What about warranty replacement? Even if Lenovo is acting up, check it out.
I think you need to contact IBM/Lenovo in Greenock, Scotland to get proper help.
