T60 motherboard in T42 laptop --- upgrade

#1 Post by randomguy » Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:50 pm

Hi guys

I want to upgrade my T42 laptop for better graphics. I was thinking about swapping the original motherboard for a T6x motherboard. The upgrade will cost around $150 if bought from ebay which sounds more economical than buying a new laptop --- and i love my T42 laptop as is.

Is this possible? Has anyone done it? I could not find information on the net about motherboards compatibility.

thanks in advance

Hi Randomguy and welcome to the forums.

If you look at, say, this photo of a T60 board, and compare it to a T42 board like this, you'll see many physical differences between the two boards.

So I'd say based on this, the T60 will not fit into a T42 base, nor I suspect could you use a T60 mobo in its base assembly and mate it to a T42 screen either.

There are boards with better graphics chips from the T42p series for instance, but this also involves changing the short fan assembly for a long one.
To give us a complete picture of your T42 could you post the model number of your T42 which can be found on the base and will be something like 2372-abc.
Also please could you give us the FRU part number of your motherboard. Remove the bottom memory cover and memory module if fitted. Under the module you'll see a sticker with the part number of the motherboard - it should be something like FRU 92P6789.

Also what are you wanting to use the T42 for?

Different size. Different connectors. Different voltage. No parts are compatible.
